Apparently he was sometimes called "Gen. James."

James Taylor III is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A112609.
N.B. I am removing James Taylor III (Taylor-5003) and Alice Thornton Taylor as the parents of Charity Taylor Prickett Jolliffe as I know of NO primary sources or reliable secondary accounts as evidence that they were her parents and there is some evidence that they were not. (Patricia Prickett Hickin, 30 April 2018).
James Taylor III was born 20 Mar 1703/4,[1] the third of ten children and the oldest of four sons of James and Martha Thompson Taylor. He was christened at "Blackwellneck Co., Va."[2]
On 25 March 1727, a few days after his twenty-third birthday, James married Alice Thornton in Rapidan, Orange County, Virginia[3] and she bore him three known children, two sons and one daughter: [4]
Francis Taylor, b. 1728, m. Ann Craddock, d. Sep 1769
Alice Taylor, b. 21 May 1730, m. Anthony Winston, d. 24 Oct 1764
Col. James Taylor IV, b. 27 Dec 1732, m1. Ann Hubbard, m2. Sarah Taliaferro, m3. Elizabeth Fitzhugh, d. 12 Mar 1814
Note: There are no reliable sources for any of the rest of the children attributed to this couple, including James Thornton Taylor.
James died on 1 March 1784, at Bloomsbury, Orange County, Virginia, at age 80. He is buried in Bloomsbury Cemetery, Bloomsbury.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
Association of this line of Taylors to the town of Rapidan is an internet myth. The town of Rapidan, Virginia was not settled until the latter half of the 18th Century, and there is no record that James Taylor II & Martha Thompson ever resided in Rapidan. Their children were probably born in King and Queen County. Orange County was not formed until 1734 from part of Spotsylvania County, which was not formed until 1721 from portions of King and Queen, Essex, and King William Counties.

Taylor-18779 and Taylor-5003 appear to represent the same person because: Date of birth and spouse indicate that this is the same person. The marriage date and date of death need correcting, but all indications are that this is the same James Taylor, III, son of James Taylor, II.
