Biography

James Taylor was born April 3, 1656, in New Kent County, Virginia, established in 1654. James died January 25, 1719, in St Peter's Parish, New Kent County. [1]

Research Notes

About 1695, in Virginia, James married Mary Gaines, a daughter of Bernard Gaines, Jr. and Martha Taylor. They became the parents of five children. [2]

On August 11, 1704, in New Kent, Virginia, James Taylor married Elizabeth Paisley The Parish of St. Peter's in which James and his wife Elizabeth lived and brought up their family was established April 29, 1697 from the old Parish of Blisland.[3]

St. Paul's Parish was established in 1704 from the upper or Northwestern portion of St. Peter's. When Hanover County was created in 1720, the boundary line between St. Peter's and St. Paul's become the boundary line between Hanover and New Kent counties. Thus many Taylor family members probably did not move but became residents of Hanover County by virtue of the area in which they lived.

James was active in the activities of the Parish. The vestry voted to make him a lay reader and their Clerk at a meeting held February 4, 1707/08. He was paid for his services always in pounds of tobacco which was the most common means of payment in his day.

He held the position of Clerk and Lay Reader until 1718, a year before his death. Several times during his tenure, the vestry met at his home. He was granted 1433 acres of land in New Kent County on August 16, 1715 by Alexander Spotswood, "His Majesty's Lieut. Governor and Commander-in-Chief of this Dominion". DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Taylor-5598 and Taylor-4627 do not represent the same person because: Different name, nothing in common

Regarding Taylor-16486 and Taylor-4627, could the two PMs please work together to resolve issues. It looks like the profiles are trying to be the same person, but they have different parents. It appears that they both married Elizabeth Paisley. Also Taylor-16486 married two different men on the same day! Both James Taylors died on the same day in the same town. I'd guess that one of you has bad information.

Taylor-16486 and Taylor-4627 look like the same person. But they have different parents. This usually indicates that either (1) they are the same person but one set of parents is wrong, or (2) they are different people and the birth and death information for one of them is wrong.

Taylor-16486 and Taylor-17317 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, dates, places of birth and death. I can find no support for including Mary Gregory or Mary Gaines as spouses, but the Paisley/Peasley lady is well-supported. Anybody got a good source?

I am not personally interested in either profile, and will not spend any more time coaxing anyone to research how to merge two records that are so obviously identical. Best wishes.
