Biography

In the 1673/4 distribution of his father's estate, John received his father's housing and two-thirds of the land. See Hawes, "Richard Taylor, tailor," for information about John's Yarmouth and Chatham activities.

He married in Yarmouth 15 Dec 1674 Sarah, dau of James Mathews.[1]

He served in King Philip's War.[2]

In 1680, the town of Yarmouth granted him six acres of planting land.[3]

In 1712, he received 23 shares in the division of the common lands of Yarmouth. But shortly before this, John Taylor had removed to Chatham, where he purchased land near Taylor's pond. In 1714, he received lot 38 there. [4]

He wrote his will 23 Jun 1718. [5]

He died before 18 Jan 1721/2 when his will was proved. (Same source)

His wife Sarah, named in his will, survived him.

Last Will & Testament[9]

In the name of God amen. I John Taylor of Chatham in the County of Barnstable in New England, being aged & under bodily Informity, tho of Good and Disposing mind and memory at this Present Time through the mercy of God, and calling to mind ye uncertainty of my Natural life and the certaintie of my death, I do make ordaine & appoint this to be my Last Will and Testament in manner and forme following...

Imps. I give and bequeath unto my Loveing wife Sarah the use and improvement of one third part of my houseing Lands and meadows, so long as she shall continue to be my widdow, and I give unto my sd wife my best bed and the furnitire belonging to it, and ten pounds more to be paid to her out of my moveable estate as it shall be apprized to be at her Dispose.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel Taylor Twenty Shillings to be paid to him out of my Estate by my Executor hereafter named.

Item. I give to my son John Taylor TWenty Shillings to be paid to him out of my estate besides what I have given to him my sd son n Lands as apepars by one deed bareing equal date with these presents.

Item. I give to my Daughter Mary Taylor Twenty & six pounds out of my estate.

item. I give to my Daughter Elizabeth Taylor TWenty pounds to be paid out of my estate.

Item. I give to my Daughte rHannah Eldredge eight shillings besides what she hath already Received for her portion.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Seth Taylor and to his heirs and assigns forever all my houseing Lands and meadows whatsoever and wheresoever the same is or may be found (excepting the Privilege In my sd house & Lands above given unto my wife) which is also to returne to him my sd son Seth or his heirs when she shall sease to be my widow-- and my will is yt the debts and Legaces above given, shall be paid out of my moveable estate as it shall be prized so far as yt will do, and ye Remainder to be paid by my sd son Seth in Consideration of what I have given to him in this my will, and to pay yt part wch must be paid out of my sd sons Sethe estate within four years after my Decease.

Lastly I do hereby impower nominate and appoint my wife Sarah and my son Seth Taylor to be Executors to this my Last Will and Testiment hereby Revocking and Disallowing all former will heretofore made by me, and declearing this to be my Last Will and Testament In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the Twentyrhid Day of June 1718.

We've got a problem; there's another John Taylor-10960 associated with this same set of parents. They're not the same man, so that means that one of them belongs to these parents and the other does not.
