Julianne Frances Taylor was born on Aug. 23, 1853 to Philip Taylor and Joanna McGrew. She was the third in a family of nine children.
In 1856, at the age of three, she went with her parents to Cedar County, Iowa and settled in Mechanicsville in 1864.
Frances married Jose Chaffee Cook on Nov. 28, 1875 in Mechanicsville, Iowa, a relationship that lasted for almost fifty years.
They became the parents of twelve children.
The Cook family were among the early residents of this community, having for years carried on ranching and farming operations in the Westerheim vicinity. Frances had a big garden and a lot of chickens and ducks and of course, cows to milk.
In their declining years they lived quite the active life, and were for a time engaged in the restaurant business in Sentinel Butte, North Dakota.
Frances was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Her religion was of a personal and practical kind and found expression in all sorts of ways. It was said that she was always helping somebody, taking care of the sick, looking after the needy. She never grew old, she was always interested in the children and young folks, and always there was much competition as to which home should have her next visit. She had a place in her home and in her heart for the homeless, were they tramps or Indians, she fed them; were they orphans or unfortunate, she sheltered them. She was always interested in the children's pets and toys and games and projects.
Since the death of Jose in 1924, Frances had been dividing her time visiting with her children where her kindly and motherly disposition made her always a welcome visitor.
Just before Christmas, Frances had a premonition that the end was near. She made sure all her bills were paid and her affairs were in order, and made requests and suggestions concerning her burial and other matters related to her death, all with a beautiful fearlessness and composure befitting her faith.
Mrs. Frances Cook passed away at the home of her son, John I. Cook in Mechanicsville, IA on Jan 29, 1931. Her body was sent to Sentinel Butte where funeral services were held on Feb 3, 1931, at the Congregational Church and conducted by Rev. Harper R. Burns, with several hymns fitting the occasion sung. After services, a large number of relatives and friends escorted the remains to the cemetery east of town where they were laid in their final resting place beside those of her husband, who preceded her in death six years ago.
At the time of Frances' death in 1931, James and Philip Taylor lived in Westerheim, John lived in Mechanicsville, Alta lived in Solen, ND, Mary lived in McCluskey, ND, Bessie lived in Cedar Rapids, IA and Fanny lived in Jamestown, ND.
