Newspaper Obituary

Mrs. Mary Flaugher died last Sunday at the age of 90 years (in Heaton, ND)

Mrs. Mary Flaugher, nee Mary Jane Taylor, eldest daughter of Philip and Joanna McGrew Taylor, was born in Massillon, Oh on Sep 14, 1850 and passed away Dec 8, 1940, at the age of ninety years, 2 months and 24 days, death being caused by carcinoma and ailments incident to old age. In August, 1931, she became bedridden as the result of a broken hip.

She came with her parents to Mechanicsville, IA in 1856, where she grew to young womanhood. On May 2, 1875, she was married to William H. Flaugher and to this union four children were born; Della (Mrs. J.E. Patrie); Leroy; Ida May and Everett Wayne. Ida May died in early childhood.

In 1879, Mr. and Mrs. Flaugher moved to Harlan, IA and later located on a homestead near Ewing, NE. Here they resided for over five years, returning in 1888 to Defiance, IA. In Feb 1898, the family came to Wells Co., and settled on a farm a short distance west of the present town site of Heaton.

After the death of her husband on Feb. 8, 1928, she went to live with her son, Wayne, and his family in Heaton. On Aug. 24, 1931, she fell and broke her hip. On Jun. 27, 1938, she returned to her old home where her son, Roy and his wife, Mary, were living. She passed away there on Dec. 8, 1940.

She leaves to mourn her loss, one daughter and two sons, living in the Heaton community; eight grandchildren, one brother, Irving Taylor of Mechanicsville, IA and other relatives. Mr. Flaugher preceded her in death, Feb 8, 1928. Shortly after her marriage she became a member of the Christian church and was long an active member in the faith. She was also a member of the Heaton-Sykeston American Legion Auxiliary.

Funeral services were held Tues at the Heaton Congregational church with the Riv. Sheldon Slater officiating. Music was furnished by a mixed quartet. Internment was made in the Heaton cemetery beside the remains of her husband.

She was a devoted wife and mother, always industrious and ever ready to lend a helping hand to others. "Grandma Flaugher" as she later became known to everyone, possessed a great courage which never wavered in spite of much suffering during the last years of her life. Her mind was keenly alert to all the latest happenings to the end of her days.
