Biography

Birth

Based on the location and estimated date of her marriage, Elisher ("Eliza") Taylor was was probably born in about 1652 in Northumberland County, Colony of Virginia. She was the daughter of John Taylor and Ann Gaskins.[1]

Marriage

She married Edmond Basye, probably in Northumberland County, Colony of Virginia, in about 1670. Their oldest son, Isaac, was born in about 1671.[2]

Death

She likely died before 2 October 1714, when her husband Edmond made his will in Northumberland County and does not name her.[3][4]

Children

Children of Edmond Basye and Eliza Taylor include:

The birth order of these children is uncertain. Isaac was the oldest son, based on Edmond's will, but all other birth years and birth order are speculative. All except Sarah are named in Edmond's will. Sarah is included based on the fact that the noncupative will of her husband was proved in 1710 based on the oaths of Isaac and John Bayse.

Disputed Origins

According to at Otto Basye, Eliza (Taylor) Basye was the daughter of John Taylor and Ann Vezey.[15] In general, Otto Basye's book is very well-researched, but he does not explain the source for his claim that Edmond's wife Eliza Taylor was the daughter of John Taylor and Ann Vezey, and that couple was too young to be her parents. In the 4th edition of Adventurers of Purse and Person, she is identified as the daughter of John's father John Taylor and Ann Gaskin, citing Otto Basye. It appears that Otto Basye skipped a generation, an error that has been corrected by the editors of the most recent edition of Adventurers of Purse and Person. Based on that source, she is attached as a daughter of John Taylor and Ann Gaskins.

Disputed First Name

The Fourth Edition of Adventurers of Purse and Person gives her first name as "Elisher," a family name repeated in earlier generations of the Gaskin family.[1] Otto Basye identifies her first name as "Eliza," but this could be a corruption or nickname of Elisher. An earlier version of this profile gave "Alice" and "Alicia" as possible alternatives. Pending a more reliable source, the spelling adopted in Adventurers of Purse and Person is used as the primary spelling in this profile, with "Eliza" as her preferred name and the other spellings included as possible alternatives.

I just realized that this family is traced in Adventurers of Purse and Person 4th ed. because this woman is actually "Elisher" Taylor - Eliza must be a nickname or corruption - and her mother was in fact Alice Gaskins, daughter of Thomas Gaskins (Gascoigne), who is the profiled Adventurer. This profile of the family gives us a whole new package of sources to work through, which should provide us with all we need to clean the rest of this family and Elisher's parents up. I will run this to ground and plan to follow the conclusions of AP&P as authoratitive on the list of their children and on Elisha/Eliza's name and family. If anyone objects to any of the changes, please weigh in so we can discuss.
