Biography

Grizelda was born in 1740. She passed away in 1856.[1]

Griselda Taylor and John Collier had three children whose descendants have joined the DAR on their records:[2]
  • John Colyar (born 4 July 1775), married Susan Graves[3]
  • Charles Colyer (born 23 July 1786), married Mary Renfro[4]
  • Nancy Ann Collier (born 4 July 1798), married Samuel Close[5]
"Mrs Gizzey Colyer, a resident of said County and State [Rockcastle County, Kentucky] aged upwardes of 90 Ninety years,... widow of John Coyler...." applied for a pension on 4 November 1843. John had received a pension prior to his death 31 March 1826. She said they married in 1772 or 1773 and had three children at the commencement of the war. "She further states that she had her firs child about 1 year after she was maried and then there was 1½ years between the others which makes the marriage about 3 or 4 years previous to the old war".[6]
The pension application also notes that she lives with her widowed daughter. Statements included in the file were:
  • On 27 March 1844 Sarah Warden, "aged near eighty years," stated that the oldest child of John and Grizzey Colyer named William "must be as much as sixty-six or sixty-seven years of age."[6]
  • On 7 Nov 1848 on Rockcastle County Richard Colyer, 64, stated that he had known John and Grizzey Colyer since his earliest recollection. At the same time and place Stephen M. Colyer, born 10 April 1775, "for many years a preacher of the gospel," also stated that he had been acquainted with John and Grizzey in Virginia since his earliest recollection, and that one of his aunts had attended their wedding.[6]
