Note: Ada was quite old when I was born at 24 Dodnor Lane Newport (Now under a shopping centre) - she used to babysit and then in the mid sixties we moved to look after her.

She had a difficult start to life. She was born out of wedlock which was a social taboo in those days. I am not sure but I think her mother (if it was minnie) was sixteen when she was born. Ada was raised in the church litten area of Newport next to the Barley Mow pub. As you can see from the tree her mother married in 1897 and had four more children with Sidney Medwin.

Ada entered service and worked in the same house as Alfred Simmonds. They married just before the first world war and had two daughters - my lovely auntie Phyl and my mum Glad

With DNA testing I have been able to make some educated guesses with respect to Ada's Paternity. I think that the most likely paternity is via Edward Roach (Roche) born 1798 in County Mayo. He had a daughter Ellen Roach born in 1835 and I believe that the most likely paternity is a sibling or offspring of Ellen.

The 2016 note is incorrect a better match is as follows ...

I have a lot of fairly close unexplained matches with a family called Demming in the USA - I do not believe that Joseph Guest Docherty who changed his name to Joe Demming was my great grandfather but at the time of writing many of my closest DNA matches are with the Demming family which suggests to me that Ada was related to the Docherty family. Joe Demming was an uncle to the actress Jean Stapleton of ‘All in the Family’ fame.

In 2019 a paternal first cousin showed up on my ancestry account - he had no relationship with the Demming family which means the link is maternal.
