Biography

Annie Mary Taylor was born in Strathalbyn, South Australia in 1888[1]. Annie is the 4th of 7 children and 2nd daughter of John Taylor[1] and Ada Robinson[1]. She married Eli Cecil Taverner in the Marylands Church of Christ in Adelaide on 15 January 1913[2] and they had one son, James William Taverner and a still-born daughter. She died in Streaky Bay in 1915[3] and is buried in the Streaky Bay cemetery[4][5] though there is a tombstone for her at the Strathalbyn General Cemetery[6].

Obituary[5]

MRS E. C. TAVERNER. A death under particularly sad circumstances took place at the Streaky Bay public hospital early on Tuesday morning last, when Annie Mary, wife of Mr E. Taverner, of Sceales Bay, passed away. She was in the best of health until 4 o'clock on Monday morning, when she complained of feeling ill, but neither her nor her husband thought it was anything serious until 11 o'clock, when she was seized with a, fit. Assistance was at once sought and Dr. Boer, of Streaky Bay, sent for. Meanwhile, she had repeated seizures and was unconscious when the Dr. arrived, though she had regained consciousness for intervals just previously. Her removal to the hospital was recommended, and she was brought in right away, but gradually sank, and died at 1 a.m., kidney disease being the cause. Deceased, who was 26 years of age, was born at Strathalbyn, where she lived for many years, afterwards removing to Maylands, from where she was married two years ago last January, Mr Taverner being then in the police force. However, he resigned shortly afterwards and entered farming pursuits at Sceales Bay, where they had resided ever since. Her parents (Mr and Mrs Taylor) are living at Larg's Bay, and one sister and four brothers also survive her, two of the latter being ministers in the Church of Christ (at Maylands and Semaphore). She was organist at the Maylands Church of Christ and previous to that at Strathalbyn, and was always willing assistant in any church work. The husband is left with a little boy just over 18 months old (a second child, a girl, having been still-born at the mother's death), and for them the sympathy of the whole district goes out. Mr Taverner was a successful applicant for one of the recently thrown open Walpuppie blocks, and the couple were looking forward to the establishment of their borne there. The funeral took place on Wednesday to the Streaky Bay cemetery, Rev. A. Cowley, of the Methodist church, officiating at the grave. The pall-bearers were Messrs W. J. Gumley, T. H. Monger, W. Keating, C. B. Beck, H. Steer and J. H. Cotton, and Messrs O. M. and G. P. Willcock had charge of the mortuary arrangements.
