George was born on 8 Apr 1758(9) to James Taylor and Ann Owen Taylor. He was their second child. George served in the Revolutionary War, and received bounty lands in Georgia for his service. [1] While serving in the Henry County (Virginia) militia, George married Hannah Jennings, a daughter of Miles Jennings, on 24 Jun 1779. [2] She was born possibly ca 1763 in Virginia and died between 1812-1816 in Madison Co., Alabama. [3] The family lived in Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. After serving in the militia, George became an outstanding public servant in Georgia, and then a founding member of the Carrick Academy Board of Trustees in Winchester, Tennessee, [4] and in his later years a highly respected citizen of Madison Co., Alabama. George married Sarah 'Sally' Johnson/Johnston on 20 May 1816. [5] He died about May 1843 on his farm near Huntsville, Alabama, and was buried there. [6] A headstone memorializing his military service may be found in Huntsville's Maple Hill Cemetery. [7]

Saw action in the Battle of Monmouth on 28 Jun 1778. Appointed First Lieutenant in Capt. John Dillard's company in Jul 1780. Saw action in the battle at Monk's Corner (Quinby Bridge) on 14 Apr 1780. Served under Henry 'Lighthorse Harry' Lee. [8]

Research Notes

There are twelve individuals named George Taylor who are honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This George Taylor is DAR Ancestor #A112508, and according to their records he did not serve in the military, however he did pay supply tax in 1780, in Henry County, Virginia. [9] DAR records indicate that George was married three times. His first wife was Hannah Jennings, his second, Margaret Hall and his third wife was "Sally" (?nee.) Application for membership in the Society of the DAR has been made by the descendants of his sons, Mai Taylor, who married Nancy Johnson McCartney; Owen Taylor, who married Spicy M. McQueen; and Lee Taylor, who married Agnes (?nee) [10]

Incorrect information in the Oct 1907 DAR application for membership of Lillian Taylor Wall has been repeated by subsequent applicants and has carried over to the DAR Patriot Index and DAR Lineage Book. [11]

George Taylor had two wives: Hannah Jennings and Sarah 'Sally' Johnson/Johnston. [12]

It is not known what name his middle initial stands for. He is named 'George Taylor' in the majority of records, including his Last Will and Testament. He signed that document 'George Taylor'.

Please note that DAR record # A112508 states that "SVC as LT in Henry Co. belongs to another George Taylor."

Thanks, Betty! I wish the DAR had expanded the comment to include this sentence from the Overview - "Future applicants must provide proof of service (and possibly residence) that meets current standards."
