Biography

In the Taylor graveyard in Richardsville, Warren County, Kentucky stands a monument to Joseph Taylor and Sarah Best Taylor, "Parents of twelve children, Kentucky pioneers and settled there in 1808. The multitude of their descendants 'rise up to call them blessed.'"[1]

Joseph, Jr. was a Revolutionary War soldier, a Private, who served with Capt. Blount's 5th N.C. Regiment. He was a gunsmith in the N.C.militia after discharge, and was wounded in the head at the Battle of Guilford's Courthouse, on Mar. 15, 1781. He left Edgecombe County, N.C. in 1808 and came to Warren County, Kentucky in the fall of 1808. In North Carolina, Joseph Jr.was a planter, and later on in Kentucky, he was a farmer.

Joseph Taylor's will names his wife Sarah, his sons Joseph Taylor, William Taylor, Allen Taylor, and his daughters Sarah, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Tempy Smart. Daughters not named in the will may have received their portions at the time of their marriages.

Joseph's will includes a bequest of "one Negro man named Jack" to his wife Sarah.[14]

  4. An alternate birthdate of Joseph, Jr. comes from a Family Bible record of grandson Nicolas Wren Taylor, son of Joseph Best Taylor, of Kansas. The Family Bible destroyed in a fire. Those who saw it, said the Bible said that "Joseph Taylor, Jr. was born in 1751." Some accounts say the birthplace was "Orange Co., Va."

It appears from court records that he died March 1819, instead of 1818. 1819, Warren Co, KY Court Records. The last Will & Testament of Joseph Taylor, deceased, was produced in Court and proved by the oath of James Hudnall, one of the subscribing witnesses. Also at this time, Warren Co. Court ordered Elijah Upton, William White, James Young, Jno Young and James Hudnall to appraise slaves and personal estate of Joseph Taylor.

I'm not sure how that tag wound up as Williamson County, Tennessee Slave owners. Joseph Taylor owned slaves in Warren County, Kentucky. He never lived in Tennessee. I will go change it.
