Biography

The Truelove left Gravesend, England in 1635 with her master, Robert Dennis, bound for the Bormoodes or Somer Islands

x Junnij 1635

Theis under-written names are to be transported to the Bormoodes or Somer-Islands, imbarqued in the Truelove de London, Robert Dennis Mr, being examined by the Minister of Gravesend concerning their conformtities to the orders & discipline of the Church of England as it now stands established: And tooke the oath of Allegeance."

Tayler James 28, Tayler Ricr 16, Tayler Wm 17, Taylor Ann 24

Previously, bio said William Taylor was born in 1625 in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay. This is not sourced or supported, nor was he on the "Truelove" 1635 passenger manifest, that was George Taylor (or Tyler depending on the site[1]), a mistake in the Blanche Bryant book. His origins appear to be unknown so far.

The "Truelove" sailed at least twice that year: once in June, again in September. George Reynolds was on the September list.)

However, in the Plymouth Colony Records we have on 12 Mar 1638/39 a William Taylor, son of the same (a carpenter of Boddington, Cornwall) transferred his indenture from John Atwood to Thomas Little. Anderson doesn't seem to know about this William Taylor, and it's not in the PGM entry for Thomas Little. John Atwood seems to have been an agent of some kind who was maybe still in London, so that's possibly where the transfer happened though Taylor Jr. & Thomas Little were in Plymouth by then.[2] Maybe this is completely unrelated but at least identifies an early William Taylor who did not appear in "The Great Migration".

He married Mary Merriam in 1650 Together they had 7 children:

  1. Abraham Taylor
  2. Mary Taylor
  3. John Taylor
  4. Samuel Taylor
  5. Isaac Taylor
  6. Jacob Taylor
  7. Joseph Taylor

He died on December 06, 1696 in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony

Note that his wife's last name at birth is widely claimed to be "Merriam" which is not supported, nor was she known to be a daughter of Joseph Merriam as is sometimes claimed.

The Blanche Bryant "Progenitors" book says he was born 1618 (unsourced) and arrived on the Truelove (July 1635). The passenger manifest shows a George Taylor or Tyler, but not a William. History of Concord makes no claims to his birth or arrival, "Historic Homes" just says "arrived before 1649" and nothing else. So I see nothing to-date about his actual origins.

We have her name as Meriam and a marriage in Lynn, Essex, MA, abt 1650. Don't know if this helps.

The citation: "Savage, James. A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England Showing Three Generations of Those Who Came Before May, 1692. Vol. I-IV. (Boston, MA, USA: 1860-1862).

Should be corrected: "Before May, 1692," "on the Basis of Farmer's Register." At the end should be James Savage's (Former President of the Massachusetts Historical Society and Editor of Winthrop's "History of New England," with two supplements in four volumes.)

The (Boston, MA, USA: 1860-1862). should read (Originally Published Boston, MA, USA: 1860-1862; Corrected electronic version copyright Robert Kraft, July 1994; download available as Vol IV, internet archive, from the University of California Libraries.) TAYLOR page 259, WILLIAM Taylor, page 265.

We share this ancestor. Please add us to the trusted list. Thank you.

Despite Savage's bio, Torrey's NE Marriages has this. TAYLOR, William (-1696) & Mary [MERRIAM? (no)] (-1699); In addition the Mary who was his wife was neither the d/o Joseph or the d/o George. More research needs to be done regarding her maiden name.
