We saw two bombs drop and when the pilot pulled out, the emblem of the rising sun underneath his wing. I realized we were at war. ... The plane came so close. I could actually see the goggles on the rear gunner as he turned his gun towards. My first reaction was fear, and I hid behind a an I- beam. When some of our men grabbed pistols and rifles and started shooting at the planes, I started putting machine guns in the mounts of the planes. The men that weren't manning machine guns or bring out ammunition were helping the men coming off the ships get cleaned up.Men came in covered with grasy oil, they had oil intheir eyes.

We started roll call a little earlier than usual that morning. Before they even got to my name, we heard a loud explosion. There were about 25 of us; we broke and ranks and ran outside the hangar to see what was going on. A dive bomber went over head about 75 feet up in the air the gunner in the rear cockpit starting shooting . We could hear the bullets hit the concrete: they were ricocheting around, going between our legs, kicking up dust and dirt and grit. No one was hit: that was a small miracle
