Research Notes

From the memorial page at Find a Grave for Robert Taylor, there is an image of a page from “Little Compton Families: The Taylor Family,”[3] where it is stated (1) From Arnold: Died at Newport, Robert Taylor of Scituate, Mass. 13 Jan. 1688, (2) A record of the marriage of Robert Taylor and Mary Hodges is found in the Friends Society records of Newport, (3) Residence: Scituate and Newport.

According to Rhode Island Vital Extracts[4], Robert Taylor was a resident of Scituate, Massachusetts and died on January 13, 1688 in Newport, Rhode Island. The Memorial page for Taylor states his burial to be in Newport, Rhode Island, at the Old Commons Burial Ground however, the organization known as, Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries[5], states that the Newport location is unknown and “Quaker records say he was of Scituate, died in Newport. He may be buried in Scituate.” This certain “Quaker record” has not been located (as of 1/4/2024).

The marriage record of Robert Taylor and Mary Hodges has not been found in “the Friends Society records of Newport” but, certain records report the marriage as “Mary Hodges to Robert Tailor, Nov. 1646” and “Robert Taylor and Mary Hodges, Nov 1646.” [6]

The reference made to records from Quakers or Friends may have developed from the biographies of the descendants of Robert Taylor such as found in The history of the state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.[7] Robert Taylor, who first came to Newport, R.I., in 1655, a rope maker, his son > Robert Taylor of Newport a Quaker who married Deborah Peckham a Quakeress, his son > Peter Taylor, a prominent member and a preacher of the Society of Friends, of Newport, his son > Robert Taylor, a tanner of Newport, and a birthright member of the Society of Friends, but a convert to Congregationalism, his son > James Taylor, the apothecary of Newport.

The area (s) of residence for Robert Taylor, Scituate and Newport, needs further research as there are no supporting facts.

Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries

"Not a cemetery. These names come from Quaker death records rather than from inscriptions on stones; they are in the database as a temporary aid to researchers. Presumably individuals are buried in several cemeteries, many of these are marked by plain fieldstones according to Quaker tradition and some may have never had stones." http://www.rihistoriccemeteries.org/newgravedetails.aspx?ID=146407

Questions:

1) What primary evidence or reputable secondary source supports the birthdate, currently "before May 1620" ?

2) What source for Dorset or Suffolk? England, even? How can we know, if we don't know who his parents were, or where they lived?

Jeff Taylor's assertion below about Unity, John and Nicolas Taylor is interesting and potentially definitive. Source?

3) What is the source of the info in his "bio" currently? ALL of that appears to have been copied-and-pasted from somewhere (not drawn from primary sources) and it needs to be reconciled with the structured data, ie, what's in the profile database.

Also, Rootsweb and FAG cannot be sources for WikiTree, right? Suggest these be removed from the list of sources, perhaps shifted to some list of Research Notes or whatever. Hints.

Rev. White of Dorset and Rev. Winthrop of Suffolk are the two most active recruiters of puritans and investors to go to New England in the 1620's and '30s. Dorset and Suffolk are also rope making centers.

No Taylor shows up among Scituate, MA, founders or residents (including those from Kent). Little Leigh Robert Taylor was born in 1633, and married at 13 in 1646? (I think not.) Little Leigh Robert died twice, once in 1688 in RI, and again in 1695 in PA? (Nope.)

His father-in-law was a mariner. His wife's maternal grandparents were from Dorset. In 1635 the ship Unity sailed from Weymouth, Dorset, England to Massachusetts Bay, captained by John Taylor. Nicolas Tailor & family were on board. Robert Taylor was a rope maker. Dorset is a famous and celebrated rope producing county.
