Thomas Taylor was born about 1818. at St James, London England. He the son of George and Elizabeth Taylor [1]
It was said that Thomas Taylor emigrated from England with several settlers, including Frederick Taylor his brother, as they were promised good work by a Mr. Moodie. Mr Moodie gained favor from the Governor, Cape Colony as he had purchased large portion of agricultural land at Swellendam (Overburg).
Thomas Taylor was married to Hannah Margaret Parsley, at Wynberg Anglican Church, St. John's on 18 July 1843. who's abode was with her father, William Joseph Parsley at Wynberg in Cape Town.[2]
Thomas & Hannah Margaret had 12 children, 11 born at Swellendam, and one Charlotte Louise Taylor, born in England.[3]
Later, Thomas Taylor owned a general dealer at Cochmanskloof, and later at Swellendam, as can be seen on various baptisms of his children at the All Christ Church (Anglican Church Swellendam.) Thomas Taylor was friends with William Twentyman, a well known silversmith, who's works are scarce and expensive today. Thomas and Hannah named a son, baptized in 1857.: William Twentyman Taylor, witnessed by William Twentyman Taylor. Thomas was keen on Sheep farming. He had gone to England in about 1865 with Hannah to gain knowledge on sheep farming. So Charlotte Louise was born at Edmonton on 8th Sept. 1865, yet Christened at Swellendam.
Thomas Taylor died young at Swellendam, aged only 55 years on 26/9/1870. Thomas is buried in the English/Anglican section of the cemetery at Swellendam. He is survived by his wife Hannah Taylor who left Swellendam area after his death, to Wynberg in Cape Town to raise and further educate her children. [4]
