Biography

John Taylor was born about 1810 at Chadderton, Lancashire, the son of Joseph and Ann Taylor. John was baptised on 4 November 1810 at St. Leonard's Church, Middleton, Lancashire. His parents were named as Joseph Taylor, a weaver, and Ann Taylor, of Chadderton. [1]

John Taylor, a bachelor, married Elizabeth Whittaker, a spinster, on 1 June 1834 by banns at the Parish church, Manchester. John was a bricklayer. Their witnesses were Thomas Parry and James Dunkerley. Thomas Parry was a witness to all five of the other weddings recorded on the same page of the marriage register as this wedding so was likely to have been a church clerk. [2]

This couple had five known children named William Taylor [baptised 9 November 1834 at St. Leonard’s Church, Middleton], Hannah Taylor [baptised 29 April 1838 at St. Leonard's Church], Emma Taylor [born 1842 and baptised on 16 April 1843 at St. Leonard's Church], Joseph Taylor [born 1847 and baptised on 2 July 1848 at St. Matthew's Church, Chadderton], and Sarah Elizabeth Taylor [born 1850 and baptised on 6 January 1851 also at St. Matthew's Church]. The children were all born in Chadderton. John was shown to be a bricklayer in the first four baptisms and as a labourer in the latter. [3]

In the 1841 census the family was living at Cragg, Chadderton. John Taylor, aged 30, was a bricklayer. Elizabeth, aged 25, was a silk weaver. William was aged 7 and Hannah was aged 3. Also living with them were John's parents Joseph Taylor, aged 50, a bricklayer and Ann Taylor, aged 50, a cotton weaver. Brother James Taylor, aged 25, a shoe maker, was also living there.
Note: In this census the age of those aged 15 years and over were rounded down to the nearest five years. [4]

In 1851 the family was shown as living at Cragg Clough, Chadderton. John, aged 40, was still working as a bricklayer. Elizabeth, aged 36, was a silk handloom winder. Both William, aged 17, and Hannah, aged 13, were silk handloom weavers. Emma was aged 9, Joseph aged 4 and Elizabeth aged 7 months. [5]

By the 1861 census the family had moved to 20 Lansdown [sic] Rd, Chadderton. John, then aged 51, was still a bricklayer. Elizabeth was aged 46. William, aged 25 [sic] was also working as a bricklayer. Hannah, aged 23, and Emma, aged 19, were both power loom cotton weavers. Joseph, aged 14, was a cour [sic] maker at a foundry and Elizabeth, aged 10, was still at school. John's father, Joseph Taylor, then a widower aged 74, was also back living with them. He was still working as a bricklayer. [6]

Elizabeth Taylor died on 19 December 1868 at Lansdowne Rd, Chadderton aged 53 years of paralysis of heart. Her death certificate further recorded Elizabeth was the wife of John Taylor, a bricklayer. The informant was son Joseph Taylor of Lansdowne Rd, Chadderton, who was in attendance at the death. [7]

Elizabeth was buried on 24 December 1868 at Chadderton Cemetery [M3 87]. The burial register recorded her date of death as 19 December 1868 and her age as 54 years [sic]. Her address was shown as Lansdowne St. [8]

In 1871 the family were still living at Lansdowne Rd, Chadderton. John, aged 60, and son William, aged 36, were both still bricklayers. Hannah, aged 32, was a cotton weaver. Joseph, aged 24, was a core maker at an iron foundry and Elizabeth, aged 20, was a cotton winder. [9]
Daughter Emma and her husband James Wostencroft were living next door.

John Taylor died on 11 June 1878 at 50 Lansdowne Rd, Chadderton aged 67 years of chronic bronchitis, 1 year 1 month 7 days, and exhaustion. His death certificate further recorded John had been working as a bricklayer. The informant of his death was son Joseph Taylor of 50 Lansdowne Rd, Chadderton, who was present at the death. His death was registered on 11 June 1878. [Death certificate] [10]

Taylor-23490 and Taylor-8421 do not represent the same person because: Too little corrobarating evidence to validate a merge. Most likely not a match.
