Disputed Origins

According to Ruth Heidgerd's book The Freer Family, The Descendants of Hugo Freer, Hugo Freer (son of Hugo Freer and Maria Anna LeRoy) married Brejen Terpen(n)ing, daughter of Jan Terpening of Flanders. She said that they registered banns on 24 Apriil 1715 and that Brejen was born at Minisink and residing at Rosendale [12] This information is inconsistent with the Kingston marriage register for the marriage banns of Hugo Freer Jr. and Bregjen Teerpenning, which identifies Bregjen as born in Mormel (Marbletown) and resident in Rosen-daal (Rosendale).[13] Additionally, the identification of Jan as the father of Brejen is a mistake. Susan Schock researched the origins of the Teerpenning family in New York, and assembled strong evidence that Gerrit Lambertsen was the father of both Jan and Brechje Terpenning.[14] She attributed the theory that the progenitor of the family was named Jan Terpening to a statement in The History of New Paltz, by Ralph LeFevre (published in 1903), that has been interpreted as indicating that the immigrant ancestor of the Terpening family was Jan Terpening, from Flanders. This is an excerpt from a statement about a list of the original patentees of New Paltz. Schock quotes the relevant words as "Jan Terpening, who also resided at Bontekoe, and was from Flanders; also Teunis Clearwater, Hendrick Van Weye, and Gerrit Lambertsen." Schock suggests that the first man named was Gerrit Lambertsen's son Jan Terpening, and that the reference to Flanders might have been due to confusion between Jan Terpening and a French schoolmaster in New Paltz whose name of Jean Thevenin had various spellings, including Jan Tebenin. The 1694 baptism registration at Kingston of Breechje, daughter of Gerrit Lammertsen (Teerpenning),[15] is consistent with this woman's age and with birth at Marbletown. Also, Heidgerd's assertion that Brejen was born the Minisink area is inconsistent with history, as Minisink was not settled at the time (1690s) that Brejen would have been born.

Terpenning-12 and Teerpenning-11 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. Merge conflict is resolved: Gerrit Lammertsen is her father and Jan Terpenning is her brother (not her father).

I disconnected Jan Terpenning, born 1670 in Flanders as the father because of the evidence showing that identification is a mistake. She is a daughter of Gerrit Lammertsen and a sister of Jan Terpenning.

This website gives some reasoning as to why the children of Gerritt Terpenning Lambertsen went with Terpenning.

I don't have access to The Freer Family: The Descendants of Hugo Freer, Patentee of New Paltz which probably contains all the answer as it isn't online.

It also looks like the parents for Brejen would also need to be consolidated.

Gerrit Lammertsen-5 and Gerret Lambertse-4 Antje Hooghlant-1 and Annetie Hoogland-9

Hopefully this is enough information to get the duplicates resolved.

Thanks, Susan

I do not understand how she ended up with the maiden name Terpenning if her father was Lambertse. Mother Hoagland was married to a Terpenning, but no dates are given. In fact, all of her brothers and sisters are named Terpenning. I think this needs to be investigated and clarified.
