Edward Telfair, Sr. was born 1 Jan 1735 in Town Head, Scotland. He immigrated to the Virginia colony in 1758, [1]before moving to North Carolina, and then to Savannah, Georgia. His brother William had already established himself in Savannah.[2]

He married Sarah Gibbons and they had the following children:

Edward Telfair 1780–1799
Josiah G. Telfair 1784–1817
Thomas Telfair 1786–1818
Alexander Telfair 1789–1832
Mary Telfair 1791–1875
Sarah G. Telfair Haig 1792–1845
Margaret Telfair Hodgson 1797–1874

He was a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1778.[3]

Telfair was a slave owner and a consultant on issues related to slavery. His mercantile firm dealt in slaves and correspondences of his included discussions of such topics as: the management of slaves; the relative merits of breaking up closely related slaves through sale; runaway slaves; the mortality rate of slaves born on plantations; the difficulty of selling closely related slaves; and the relations between whites and freedmen.[4]

Slaves

[Need to find records]

In 1782 a slave that he owned named Gabriel, born, say, 1757 and "bred in the Jerseys", was named in a Maryland advertisement for slaves who had run away from the Catoctin Furnace in Frederick County, Maryland. [5]

1803 Death

Telfair passed away about 1803.[6]

Edward's will was written in 1799. His estate passed probate on 4 Jan 1808.[7]

Legacy

  • Telfair County, Georgia is named in his honor.

Telfair-34 and Telfair-6 appear to represent the same person because: I created Telfair-34 today. Telfair-6 did not show up as a suggested profile. I tried adding his daughter and that is how I discovered the duplicate.
