Note: There seems to be some confusion as to who Mary Telfer's parents were. The following Research by Tracy Johnston shows that Mary Telfers parents were James Telfer and his wife Janet of Roxburghshire, Scotland and not James Telfer and Ann Davidson of Midlothian, Scotland.
Mary Telfer was born about 1830 in Cananbie, Dumfries,Scotland, to James Telfer and his wife Janet (last name unknown). Mary Telfer married Robert Murray on 12 Dec. 1850 in Castleton,Roxburgh,Scotland. [1] [2] In the 1851 Scotland Census [3] Mary Telfer daughter of James and Janet Telfer, age 21 was counted as living with James and Janet at midnight March 30-31st, also recorded in this census is a Murray 4 days old. This Murray would be the son of Mary and her husband Robert Murray. This son was later named John Murray and he was born on 27 March 1851. John Murray died at the age of 30 years in 1881.
The 1851 Scotland Census [4] shows Robert Murray as being counted at his parents home at midnight on March 30-31st, with his parents ( John and Anne Murray) and his siblings. It would seem by the census that although Robert and Mary were married in December of 1850, at the time of the census they were both with their respective parents.
Robert and Mary(Telfer) Murray will not show up on any Scotland Census after 1851 as their second child Mary Murray was born in 1852 in Ontario, Canada. Mary was married in 1881 at the age of 29 years, and her place of birth is listed as Ontario.
While most people firmly believe that Mary Telfer was born on 28 July 1836, in Midlothian, Scotland, to James Telfer and Ann Davidson this is incorrect. In the 1851 Scotland Census Mary Telfer, daughter of James Telfer and Ann Davidson was living at home with her parents and siblings, she was 14 years old, not married and did not have a child. [5]
In 1852 Mary (Telfer) Murray immigrated to Canada with her husband Robert Murray her son John Murray and Robert's brother John Murray, first sailing from Liverpool to New York, travelling thru Albany to Niagara Falls and on to Toronto, the entire trip took 7 weeks. Robert and Mary settled in Galt for a time before moving to Plympton Township, Lambton County. They lived here for 15 years before selling their land and moving to Champaign County,Illinois for 3 and a half years. Returning to Canada in 1870 they again chose to settle in Lambton County this time on the 12th Concession of Moore Township. [6]
Mary (Telfer) Murray died on 4 Aug 1893 in Lambton County, Ontario, Canada [7] [8]
