Eliza was born about 1827 in County Down, Ireland. Eliza was the child of Henry Telford and Jane Seay.
On 12 Nov 1852 Eliza married William Rowley, Master Mariner at Bangor, Down, Ireland [1].
Five months later she was on board the 'Coromadel' at Plymouth, England calling herself Eliza Jane Telford and sailing to Australia. She was accompanying her mother and her siblings many of whom migrated permanently to Australia.
It can't be proven but it seems probable William Rowley was on the ship as part of the crew. Eliza was in all likelihood going by her maiden name to deceptively make herself eligible for the free fare on the assisted immigration scheme. Each adult fare amounted to just short of £20.
After arriving in Hobart Town, Tasmania on 18 July 1853, Eliza was required to enter employment under contract for three months as a condition of the Scheme. She was signed up with a Mr Robarts for 16 shillings per week. Whatever the arrangement she was soon to leave Tasmania and return to Ireland.
By 29 Jan 1855 Eliza gives birth to her first daughter, Louisa Jane, in Bangor, Down, Ireland. On 8 Apr 1855 Louisa is baptized in the Church of Ireland at Bangor.
Eliza is still in Bangor three years later when she gives birth to her second daughter Margaret on 5 Apr 1858.
Three years later at the Scotland census on 7 Apr 1861, Eliza is living at Govan, Glasgow with her family and brother Hugh Telford [2].
Later that year on 27 Oct 1861,Eliza gave birth to her third daughter, Williamina at Tradeston, Glasgow. Four months later, on 17 Jan 1862, still at Tradeston, Eliza's daughter Margaret dies.
Almost exactly eight years after her last known childbirth, Eliza's only son, William, is born on 17 Oct 1869, at Govan, Glasgow.
At 2 Apr 1871 Eliza is living at Greenock, Glasgow with her family [3] and some time within the next ten years they make their final relocation to Dunoon, Argyllshire. On 3 Apr 1881 she is living with her husband William, her daughter Williamina and her brother Hugh Telford [4] . William is not mentioned.
On 5 Apr 1891 Eliza is still living at Woodbank Cottage, Dunoon with her brother Hugh Telford [5]. Less than a year later Hugh dies at Woodbank Cottage and the following year on 18 Apr 1893 at 5.05am at the age of 63 Eliza dies of congestion of the lungs [6].
