Biography

Elizabeth, daughter of William Tenney and Katherine Marston, was born on 9 Apl 1643 at Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[1][2] She died on 16 Apr 1689, age about 44 years, at Beverly, Essex, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[3]

She was the first wife of John3 Woodbury (Humphrey2, John1) born 24 Oct 1641 in Salem Essex, Massachusetts.[4] They married by about 1670; children (surname WOODBURY):

  1. Elizabeth - bp. 3 Apr 1670[5]
  2. Mary - b. 6 Sep 1671; m. William CONANT[6]
  3. poss. Martha (unproven)
  4. poss. Rebecca - b. Sep 1789 (unproven; not Rebecca d/o Hugh b. 22 Feb 1667)[7]

Disputed Relationships

Elizabeth Tenney should not be confused with Elizabeth who was first married to John Woodbury Sr and second to John Dodge and died on 6 Jan 1726, age about 91.[8]

FASG genealogist Douglas Richardson and other noted scholars completely disagree that John2 Woodbury [son of John1 and Agnes married Elizabeth Tenney.

This Elizabeth was not mother of: Elizabeth Balch, John Woodbury, Abigail Woodbury, Ebenezer Woodbury, or Hannah Dodge (Woodbury).

It seems unlikely that Elizabeth Tenney b 1643 would marry John Woodbury in 1653 as she would only be ten years old. Is it possible the birthdate is incorrect? Family search records note " There were two JOHN WOODBURY’s who married two different ELIZABETH TENNY’s and lived in Beverly, Massachusetts at the same period of time. The other JOHN WOODBURY was the son of his uncle Humphrey Woodbury. Humphrey’s John Woodbury 1641 married the Elizabeth Tenney 1643 daughter of Deacon William Tenney and wife Catharine of Rowley, Massachusetts whereas John Woodbury 1629 married what may have been that Elizabeth Tenney’s older cousin Elizabeth Tenney 1632. Correct, Elizabeth Tenney was married John Woodbury-247 (Jr) about 1670. The WikiTree profiles of Elizabeth Unknown-574916 and her husband John Woodbury-147 (Sr) were mixed up with John Woodbury-246 (Jr) and his wife Elizabeth Tenney-35. Though possible, it seems unlikely there were two different John Woodburys with wives named Elizabeth Tenney. You might want to review the updated profiles for these two couples. Is there a source for Tenney as the surname of Elizabeth b. in 1632?
