Henderikus was born at Rochester, Ulster County, New York, and baptized there on 18 October 1724, by a domine from the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York, where the baptism was recorded. He was recorded as the child of Matheus Terwilligen and Marytjen Oosterhout. Witnesses were Aldert Oosterhout and Helena Roosekrans. His was one of eleven baptisms at Rochester that day.[13]

On April 11, 1758, Hendricus enlisted in Captain Smadus' Company of Militia. He gave his birthplace as Shawangunk, and his occupation was farmer. The roll also gives his height at 5' 8", and had black hair.
During the Revolution, he served in the 4th Regiment Ulster County Militia.
