Biography

Uncertain Origin, possible 1626 birth

The sole source for a birth in Greenwich, England and death of between 1702 and 1704 appears to be a book or publication "Heads of Families who settled in Newbury previous to 1700" on page 47 by "Jewett". The Jewett source has not yet been found on the internet or in worldcat.org.

A birth year of about 1626 is supported by an Essex County, Massachusetts deposition of 1676 in which he apparently stated that he was about 50 years old.[1] assuming it was the same man (no other man of this name and approximate age has been found). If he was born about 1626 then his marriage to Martha Copp would seem to be a second (or later) marriage.

Henry Tewksbury (aka Tuxbury, Teuksbury, Tukesbury) was born in England about 1635 according to Cutter in "New England Families...&c".[2] Hoyt in "The Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury...&c" does not assert a birth year for him.[3] Why Cutter assigned this birth date is not known.

Both of these sources state that he married Martha Copp on 10 Nov 1659 as does Torrey in "New England Marriages to 1700" who gives a location of "Boston/Newbury/Amesbury"[4]

His immigration data is not known although the often-times unsourced "William Filby" passenger list on ancestry.com stated dates of both 1661 and 1663 to Newbury.

1669 - Took the oath of fidelity at Newbury[5]
1669 - Sold his farm there and removed to Amesbury[2]
1677 - Took the prescribed oath of allegiance at Amesbury[2]
1680 - Admitted a freeman.[2]
1693 - Was tithingman at Amesbury[2]
1697 - Was living, but doubtless died soon afterward.[2]

He also appears minimally in Savage's "Genealogical Dictionary" as "Tewksbury".[6]

Cutter and Hoyt both state that he was living in 1697 although his last documented appearance seems to be in 1693 when he tithed in Amesbury. His exact fate is not known although as noted above "Jewett" seems to have asserted that he died between 1702 and 1704.

"The family of Tewksbury, TEWKSBURY Tewxberry, Tuksbery or Tuxbury, as the name has been spelled, might trace their ancestry, if the records were complete, back to the borough of Tewk or Tuck in England. Henry Tuxbury or Tewksbury, weaver, of Newbury and Amesbury, Massachusetts, removed to Boston, where he married, November 10. 1659, Martha Copp, widow of William Harvey. He took the oath of fidelity at Newbury in 1669. In the same year he sold his place there and removed to Amesbury. where he took the oath of allegiance in 1677. He was one of the petitioners of 1680, a freeman in 1690. tithingman in 1693, and was living in 1697. His children were: Elizabeth, Hannah, Henry, Naomi, Ruth, Mary, Martha and John."[7]

Merge for Tewksbury-2 and Tewksbury-191 submitted. I believe "about 1626" and "England" are the most appropriate birth facts to retain, see Tewksbury-2 for sources and analysis. I will clean up the profile post-merge or just the Tewksbury-2 profile can be retained.

Tewksbury-191 and Tewksbury-2 appear to represent the same person because: Both these men are the early immigrant to Newbury and Amesbury and husband of Martha Copp. I have added sources and analysis to Tewksbury-2. A birth year of about 1626 is supported by a 1676 deposition and I believe should be used post-merge (1635 comes from Cutter and Hoyt without source). Origin of Greenwich is asserted by a mysterious "Jewett" source (documented on Tekwsbury-2) which I have not been able to find anywhere on the internet. Please do not reject just because the current birth years are 14 years apart, I left them that way so as not to taint any review. Thanks!

Tewksbury-110 and Tewksbury-2 appear to represent the same person because: The dates are off a little, but these definitely look like the same person with two profiles for the wife.

You can document any discrepancies in the biography until you are able to find sources that will settle them.

Thanks!
