Research Notes

Research by Rebecca Thames-Simmons:

On 12 Jun 1750, Thomas Thimbs purchased 100 acres on the southwest sisde of the Northwest River (this would be the Cape Fear River), for 100 pds, from Robert Dunn. According to the deed, the land was part of an original patent to John Dunn, who had then conveyed it to Richard Dunn, and Richard had conveyed it to Robert. Bladen Co NC Deed Book 23, p 184[1]

We know Priscilla Thames married a Dunn per her father Thomas's 1758 will, Bladen County NC.

From the following records, it appears they spent time in both South Carolina and Georgia.

From "Colonial Records of the State of Georgia," Volume 11, page 353, Franklin Printing and Publishing Company, 1907:[2]

Page 353-354: May 1771. Read a Petition of Robert Dunn Setting forth that he had resided upwards of four Years in the Province that he had a Wife and four Children for whom he never had any land granted him and was desirous of taking up Land for Cultivation Therefore praying for three hundred and fifty Acres of Land adjoining or near to Mobley's Pond in St George's Parish. 23 c r - vol 11

From "Colonial Records of the State of Georgia," Volume 15, page 391-392, Franklin Printing and Publishing Company, 1907:[3]:

A Petition from Several of the Inhabitants of the Parish of Saint George was Presented to the House and read Setting forth That the Petitioners are Informed that Thomas Morgan of Savannah, Taylor, has Petitioned to the House to establish an Ferry, and to vest the same in him as he (the said Thomas Morgan) did at the time of the sale of Land now belonging to Thomas Burton reserve to himself five acres of the said Tract as being a very proper and convenient Place for the purpose of conveying Persons from this to the Neighbouring province and that Travellors have been for some time Accommodated there, and is well known by the Name of Dunn's Ferry, the Petitioners therefore beg leave to inform the House that the Ferry has been now (sic) Seven Years by Robert Dunn on the land now belonging to Thomas Burton and is the only convenient Place that a Ferry can be kept and that there never has been kept any Ferry by Thomas Morgan or by any other Person for him neither is it possible that any can be kept there, but on the Land where Thomas Burton now lives, and as it will be of great service to this and the Neighbouring Province to have a ferry established there, the Petitions therefore Pray that the ferry may be established and Vested in Thomas Burton and his Assigns for such Number of Years as the House in its Wisdom shall think Proper and the Petitioners as in duty bound shall ever pray &c

"A Petition from Robert Dunn was also presented to the House and read Setting forth "That at the time he was Purchasing of the Land (now belonging to Thomas Burton) from Thomas Morgan he the said Morgan proposed to reserve to himself a Part thereof, and the privilege of a Ferry on which the Petitioner refused dealing with him for the land the Petitioner further sets forth that Thomas Morgan then agreed to Sell him the land with the privilege of the Ferry for Sixty Pounds Sterling, which he Agreed to and paid the Money Thomas Morgan then reserved five Acres for a Lumber Yard, which was Accordingly laid out for him Agreeable to his Orders which is in low Ground and often under water and the Tract of land of Four hundred and Forty Acres which the Petitioner bought of Thomas Morgan with the privilege of the Ferry, the Petitioner likewise sets forth that he has since sold the same to Thomas Burton and which is well known to several persons in the parish..

Robert Dunn received a grant for 350 acres in the parish of St Paul, in Georgia, bounded on the southeast by Abenton Phelps, and the rest was vacant land.[4]

From "Some Georgia County Records," Volume 1 (Silas Emmett Lucas, Southern Historical Press, 1977).[5] Volume 1 covers legal records from the counties of Columbia, Hancock, Jefferson and Warren:

Page 84: 9 June 1775 Robert Dunn and Precilla his wife of “Province of South Carolina, Granville County,” to Ignatius Few of Parish of St. Paul, for 100 pounds sterling, land in Parish of St. Paul, originally granted to Robert Dunn by his majesty “sixth day of Dec. 1774,” adj. Abenton Phillips (Phelps) corner, 350a. Robert Dunn {seal} Precilla Dunn {seal} Wit: Josiah Dunn, John Carpenter Rec. July 29, 1795

The problem with this record is that there was no Granville County in South Carolina. There was a Greenville, but it was not a county. Granville Co North Carolina is rather far removed from the vicinity to make sense (borders Virginia), but further research is warranted.

Thames-121 and Thames-73 appear to represent the same person because: they share a similar birthdate, the same parents and the same siblings.
