Biography

According to the 1850 census, James was born about 1780 in South Carolina.[1]

In this family group are:

  • Jas [James], age 70, male, occupation Planter, no real property, born SC
  • Feridy, age 57, female, born NC
  • Elis. E, age 22, female, born SC
  • Mariah C, age 19, female, born SC
  • Robert J, age 16, male, occupation Laborer, born SC

His father was John Thames Sr. This is evidenced by two Sumter Co SC deeds. In the first deed, dated 5 Sep 1824, John Thames Sr made a deed of gift to his daughter in law Fereby Thames.[2] An 1834 deed shows that Fereby was James's wife, when they convey property to Samuel N Thames.[3]

The first deed proves that James and Fereby (also seen as Feriby, Phariby) were married by 1824.

On 24 Jul 1824, John Thames Sr sold 350 acres of land (situated on Sammys Swamp and the waters of Black River) which was originally granted to him (John), to Robert and James Thames jointly.[4] Since James was John Sr's son, it seems to suggest that Robert was also John Jr's son.

James died by 1860, indicated by Fereby and the three children being enumerated without James in Clarendon Co SC. Real property for the household is valued at $275.[5]
