Joseph's parents are James Thetford and Prudence Armstrong, both from Tennessee. His known sibling is James H Thetford. (From his mother's second marriage - his half siblings are Thomas Lafayette, Jesse, Sarah Jane, Martin Van Buren, Alexander, Crockett, David and Seletha Hollis}.
He married Caroline Frances McCrory, ca 1847. Their known children are Benjamin Franklin (Benny), James A, John C, Sarah Jane, Charles Mack, Georgia Ann and Joseph Pulaski Thetford.
After Joseph's death Caroline and several of her children left Mississippi for Limestone County, Texas with her brother-in-law, wife and family, James and Elizabeth Thetford.
