Biography

BRIGITTE BREAU VEUVE CHARLES THIBODEAU is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 6 Left. He is memorialized as the deceased husband of Brigitte Breau, who immigrated with their children Anne Nanette, Jean Anselme, and Marie Louise.[1]

Charles Thibodeau son of Michel Thibodeau and Agnes Dugas, was baptized on 27 May 1713, in Port Royal, Acadia.[2]

His siblings were:

  1. Marguerite Thibodeau
  2. Agnes Anne Thibodeau
  3. Pierre Thibodeau
  4. Joseph Thibodeau
  5. Marie Madeleine Thibodeau
  6. Marie Josephe Thibodeau
  7. Elisabeth Thibodeau
  8. Francois Thibodeau
  9. Benjamin Thibodeau
  10. Jean Baptiste Thibodeau
  11. Amand Gregoire Thibodeau
  12. Claire Thibodeau
  13. Anne Thibodeau

He married Brigitte Breau about 1739 in Acadia.[2]

Their children were:

  1. Rosalie Thibodeau (c.1740)
  2. Theotiste Thibodeau (c.1740)
  3. Marguerite Thibodeau (1740)
  4. Anastasie Thibodeau (1744)
  5. Jean Anselme Thibodeau (c.1749)
  6. Anne "Nanette" Thibodeau (c.1757)
  7. Madeleine Thibodeau (c.1761)
  8. Marie Louise Thibodeau (1761)

During the Great Upheaval of the Acadians, he was imprisoned, along with his wife and three children, at Halifax. They were counted there upon their release at war's end on 2 August 1763, at Halifax, Acadia.[3]

He died after August 1763,[2] and was buried, two years later, on 5 August 1765.[citation needed]

Research Notes

This profile was in the "Needs Formatting" category; doing so uncovered a few problems:

  • It states that he was at Halifax, and the third citation has text possibly to that effect, but no source name.
  • White apparently only lists 6 children, not 8. Here are two daughters, both born in 1761, "Madeleine" in Acadie -- who was not listed with the others on the Wall of Names-- and Marie Louise who is, but was born in Boston. Both have fact statements that, if true, should be explained.
  • Death and burial statements were conflicting, and both seem unsourced. Changed DOD in bio to after the 1763 date he was supposedly at Halifax. Burial date must have come from somewhere, or did someone guess?
