Biography

THEOTISTE THIBODEAU, veuve BONAVENTURE GODIN is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 3 Right, listed with her is their daughter Anne Barbe.[1]

Theotiste Thibodeau, daughter of Charles Thibodeau and Brigitte Breau, was born in Faux Rivieres, Acadie, in the British-ruled Colony of Nova Scotia about 1743. [citation needed] When Theotiste was only 12 years old, the British governor of Nova Scotia decided to expel all Acadian residents of the colony, and they had to leave. Her family resisted until they either were captured or they surrendered to the British, and were interned at Halifax.

Her exile story is not fully known here, but we know from her daughter's age of 5 in Louisiana in 1766,[2] and from that daughter's second marriage record, which names her parents, that Theotiste married Bonaventure Gaudin (Godin),[3] probably in Halifax, Nova Scotia, c.1760. About 200 of the Acadians imprisoned there waited for their leader, Joseph Broussard, dit Beausoleil, to finish his extended sentence, then set sail to eventually settle in Louisiana. By that time, Bonaventure had died, whether in Halifax or in Haiti on the way to Louisiana is unknown.

Theotiste settled in Cabanocey, Louisiana, at the "Acadian Coast" settlement on the Mississippi River, at first in the household of friends or family.[2]

She married second to Firmin Landry about 1770 in Louisiana.

Known children of the marriage:

  1. Francoise Landry (1770)
  2. Hubert Landry (1773)
  3. Helene Landry (1774)
  4. Rosalie Landry (1776)
  5. Valentin Landry (1778)
  6. Agnes Landry (1784)[4]
  7. Marguerite Landry (1789)

Theotiste Thibodeaux died in St. Martinville, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana in 1824. She was about 81 years old. [citation needed]
