Reasearch Notes

Fraser has William Bakers first wife as Elizabeth Thomas - this is the only source I've located regarding her identity. That William Bakers' first wife was Elizabeth Thomas should be considered doubtful for the following reasons:

1) Fraser's book was heavily based on interviews, including with Arthur Baker and Edith Hogarth, two of William Baker's grandchildren.

2) Arthur and Edith's paternal grandmothers' mother, Elizabeth Rundle, had a maiden name of Thomas. This is seen in Farr, and is better supported by evidence than the idea that William Baker's first wife was named Elizabeth Thomas.

3) The question is whether it is more likely that two separate close ancestors of Arthur Baker and Edith Hogarth married women named "Elizabeth Thomas" or more likely that Fraser made an error, or there was some confusion regarding which grandparent or great-grandparent had married an Elizabeth Thomas. Both are possible.

4) There's nothing disproving that William Bakers' first wife was named "Elizabeth Thomas", so this profile reflects the best knowledge I currently have. Farr seems to take the fact that William Bakers' first wife was named "Elizabeth Thomas" as given, and was doubtful that William Rundles' wife would have borne that name - she may have had further information.[1]

5) In my opinon, this name should not be considered sure, or confirmed, at this writing.

6) I've discovered a William Baker from Diss, Norfolk, who had children William, Elizabeth, and Noah, all born on plausible dates for this family. No sign as yet of a daughter Mary. (John was born in Canada) His wife was not named Elizabeth Thomas, but instead Mary Williams. This family is also the correct religion, W. Methodist. This is speculative, but a lead to be followed up. (Also of note - Diss is very close to the border w/ Suffolk)
