Biography

Alice Thompson was born about 1760 in Nassau, Bahamas to John Thompson and Alice Gilbart Thompson.

She was a beneficiary of her mother's 1797 will - witnessed by Monmouth Purdy, Edward Lane, and Joseph Eve:

".. I Alice Thompson of the Island of New Providence Widow .. I do hereby will and bequeath .. unto my dearly beloved son Benjamin Thompson my Negro Woman Rebecca .. next I do give unto my son-in-law John Kemp one mourning ring .. next I will and bequeath unto my .. children Benjamin Thompson, Alice Thompson and Martha Beek and the heirs of their Bodies all the remainder part of my Estate .. I do appoint my son Benjamin Thompson and my son-in-law Cornelius Brown to be the Executors .. third day of July in ..1797.."

Alice Thompson married Cornelius Brown, shopkeeper of Nassau, 30 November 1795. She was widowed in 1799 and was the sole beneficiary of his estate. They had no children.

Mrs Brown registered two slaves in the 1822 Bahamas Slave Registration: Rebecca and her daughter Mary. By the 1825 Registration, Rebecca and two daughters were enslaved.

Alice Thompson Brown died in 1825 in Nassau, Bahamas. Her 1823 will was proved in 1825. Since she and Cornelius had no children, she left her estate to her nieces & nephews - the children of Benjamin Thompson: Cornelius, Maria Joanna, John, Alexander, and Thomas Thompson.
