Biography

Ransom was the son of Joseph Thompson and Mary Jolly.[1]

In 1810 Ransom appears on the Pendleton County, South Carolina census with the following household members:

males)-10:4 ; 26-45:1
females)-10:1 ; 16-26:1[2]

By 1830 he has moved and is living in Carroll County, Georgia with the following household members:

males)5-10:1 ; 10-15:1 ; 15-10:1 ; 50-60:1
females)5-10:3 ; 10-15:1 ; 20-30:1 ; 40-50:1[3]

And 1840 finds him there with a household consisting of:

males)-5:1 ; 10-15:1 ; 60-70:1
females)-5:1 ; 15-20:3 ; 20-30:1 ; 40-50:1[4]

On 15 Nov 1831 Ransom Thompson, JP attested a deed of Benjamin Merrell, Sheriff of Carroll County to James G. Perryman.[5]

On 30 May 1832 Ransom Thompson, JP attested a deed of James B. Robertson to William F. Smith in Carroll County, Georgia.[6]

On 03 Jul 1832 Ransom Thompson, JP attested a deed of David Barnwell to James B. Robertson in Carroll County, Georgia.[7]

On 04 Apr 1833 Zachariah Thompson and Randsom Thompson, JP attested a deed of Thomas Pullen to William Bailey in Carroll County, Georgia.[8]

On 17 Apr 1833 Ransom and Elizabeth Thompson appear on a Carroll County deed of Simon W. Nichols of Jones County attesting the deed.[9]

On 26 Nov 1833 Ransom Thompson attested a deed of Jiles S. Boggess to Timothy C. Golden in Carroll County, Georgia.[10]

On 07 Mar 1833 Harrel Felton of Carroll County, Georgia sold to Robert Thompson of same county for the amount of a judgement obtained against said Felton in favor of John James at Hall Superior Court March Term 1827 which now amounts to $1878, for two lots of land numbers 125 and 156 in the 8th district of Carroll County containing 405 acres. Signed by Harrel Felton (his mark). Wittnessed by William Thompson, Zachariah Thompson. On 30 Jun 1834 Zachariah gave oath that he witnessed Harrel Felton sign the above deed and that William Thompson was a witness. Oath signed by Zachariah and by Ransom Thompson, JP.[11]

On 12 May 1835 Ransom Thompson, JP signed attesting a deed of Absolem Halenibe of Habertham County to Joseph Little.[12]

On 20 Dec 1830 Robert Thompson of Carroll County, Georgia sold to John Hunnicutt for $500 land lot #156 in the 8th district of Carroll County (now Haralson) containing 202 ½ acres. The deed was attested by Zachariah Thompson and Ransom Thompson, JP on 01 Mar 1836.[13]

On 10 Mar 1836 Ransom Thompson, JP witnessed deeds of William Little to William M. Peters, Carroll County[14] and Robert J. Chandler to Charles Sides;[15] On 12 Mar 1836 Ransom witnessed a deed of Charles Sides to Moses M. Powell, and the next day he witnessed a deed of Reuben Rasberry to William F. Smith, Carroll County. [16]

On 23 Mar 1836 Ransom Thompson, JP attested a deed of William Kennon to the heirs of Thomas Kennon.[17][18]

On 12 Jan 1836 Henry Sizemore of Carroll County, Georgia sold to Zachariah Thompson for $50, 50 acres in the SW corner of lot #172, 8th district of Carroll (now Haralson) County, running with Roberson’s line to a corner between Thompson and Abner Norman. Attested by William Carmichael and Joseph C. Thompson. Oath of Joseph C. Thompson witnessed by Ransom Thompson, JP on 29 Nov 1836.[19]

On 24 Oct 1830 Joseph Thompson and Randsom Thompson sold to Jesse Chambers for $400, lot #102, 6th district, Carroll County, Georgia.[20]

On 28 May 1836 Ransom Thompson witnessed the oath of John Carmichael for the deed of James R. R. Kennedy of Hancock County to William F. Smith, Carroll County, Georgia. [21]

On 13 Feb 1838 Ransom Thompson attested a deed of Thomas McGuire to James Jones, Carroll Conty, Georgia. [22]

He is found on the Carroll County, Georgia tax lists for 1832 in Captain Burgess' district,[23] for 1842 in the 8th district,[24] and for 1844 he is listed as "Administrator of the Estate of Ransom Thompson", indicating he had died sometime during the 1843 tax year.[25]

Ransom died in 1843 probably in Carroll County, Georgia where he was last living.[4][25]

Tammy and Teresa. I found this 1866 Smith Co., MS Land Tax List has a Ransom Thompson who may be a descendant as Smith County is where my branch descended from Joseph Thompson & Mary Jolly went.
