Biography

John Tompson was the son of John Tompson of Preston Capes and his first wife Sarah Mills.[1] He was named in the IPM of his father as the oldest son and heir of his father John Tompson of Preston Capes. The IPM makes clear that his mother was not the current wife of John Tompson, but rather of an earlier first wife. The IPM gives his birth date as 1 October 1611.
He matriculated at Lincoln College, Oxford University, age 16, on 25 October 1628; received his B.A. on 24 April 1632; received his M.A. on 24 January 1634/5.[2] He was instituted as vicar of Preston Capes on 24 January 1643/4, with Richard Knightley armiger as his patron.
He married Jane Knightley, daughter of Richard Knightley esquire, on 1 October 1644. She was the widow of ______ Gastrell. They had one child, Richard Tompson, baptized on 30 April 1646 at Preston Capes. Richard entered a pedigree into the visitations of Oxfordshire, 1669 and 1675 which help prove the Tompson ancestry.[3]
"Mr. John Tomson, rector of Preston" was buried on 27 June 1667 in Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, England.

Birth

Born: 1 October 1611, presumably in Preston Capes, Northampton, England.
Date from his father's IPM.[4]

Child of Rev. John Tompson and Jane Knightley:
  1. Richard Knightley. Born on 21 April and baptized on 30 April 1646 at Preston Capes.[1]
"Richard the sonne of John Tompson minister of this parish & Jane his wife was borne April 21th and baptized April 30th".[6]

Death

Buried: 27 June 1667 in Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, England.[1]
"Mr. John Tomson rector of Preston was buryed June 27 (1667)".[7]

Research Notes

  • Immigrant?: He is sometimes said to be the same person as John Tompson of Middleborough, Massachusetts. This is obviously incorrect as the history of John Tompson is known and he never left England. If John Tompson of Middleborough immigrated as early as 1623 as is said on his profile, this would preclude him from being the same as John Tompson of Preston Capes who was clearly still in England when his father's IPM was taken in 1628. Also, the dates are off for them to be the same person. We know John Tompson of Preston Capes was born 1 October 1611; John Tompson of Middleborough was born in 1616 (aged 80 at his death 1696).
