(2) John Hitchcock (d. 6 Jul 1716) as his second wife. John Hitchcock and probably Mary had the following known children[3]:

The children of John Hitchcock are listed. Mary Tomson's first husband Samuel Lines did not die until 1692. So the first ten children at least were children of the first wife and not of Mary and probably all the children were by Abigail.

Death

Mary's date of death is unknown, however it is after Aug 12 1717, when during the settlement of John Hitchcock's will, Mary is referred to as Mary Clark (Samuel Clark's wife), alias "Hitchcock". Separately, the Clark family genealogy indicates that Samuel Clark married Mary Thompson, daughter of John and Ellen Harrison Thompson[4]. Mary is thought to have died in Woodbridge, Litchfield, CT.

Note: Woodbridge, Litchfield, CT is located approximately 18 miles north-north-west of New Haven.

Research Notes

John Thompson Confusion in Connecticut

  • There were two John Thompsons in New Haven, Connecticut in the early 1600’s, each with a daughter named Mary. This has led to some confusion.
  • Donald Lines Jacobus in his “Families of Ancient New Haven” named them Family 1 and Family 3. See Vol VII, pages 1749 – 1750.
  • Family 1: John Thompson was married to Ellen Harrison the daughter of Richard Harrison. Their daughter was Mary Thompson who married Samuel Lines, John Hitchcock, and Samuel Clark. John and Ellen also had 4 other daughters: Anne, Elizabeth, Lydia, and Sarah.
  • Family 3: John Thompson was married to Dorothy ____. Their daughter was Mary Thompson who married John Cooper. John and Dorothy had 6 other children: Hannah, John, Joseph, Abigail, Rebecca, and Sarah.
  • Just to confuse things further, there was also a John Thompson from Stratford, Connecticut.

Mary

This Mary did not marry John Cooper, but rather married: Samuel Lines, John Hitchcock and Samuel Clark -- the Lines and Hitchcock children overlap with the Cooper children One might suspect that the Mary Thompson that married John Cooper, Jr. might not have been the daughter of John Thompson and Ellen Harrison.

Find a Grave Discrepancy

According to Find A Grave: Memorial #28272072 in Center Church on the Green Churchyard, New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, the daughter of JOHN "THE FARMER" and ELLEN THOMPSON, was the Mary Thompson who married JOHN COOPER, JR. on Dec. 27, 1666 in New Haven, CT, and who died in 1714. This is in direct contradiction to the information provided by jacobus.
