Alexander joined the 74th Foot as an Ensign on 22nd September 1803. He fought in the Peninsula War rising to the rank of Brevet Lieutenant Colonel on 21st September 1813.[1][2]
He retired to half pay in 1819 returning in 1830 as a Brevet Colonel. In 1850 he became full Colonel and 1851 Lieutenant General.[1]
Alexander married firstly Anne (née Jones), the widow of General Charles Miller in 1815.[3]
Alexander married secondly Mary Eliza Cowley at St. Thomas in Dublin on 20th July 1826.[1]
He died at Salruck on 23rd November 1856.[1][2][4]
