William was born in 1855. He was the son of William Thorburn and Mary Spiers. [1] He married Elizabeth Otto in 1878 [2] He passed away in 1931 age 76 [3]

OBITUARY
MR. W. L. THORBURN. [from our own correspondent.] THAMES, Monday. The death occurred yesterday at his residence, Tararu, of Mr. William Lang Thorburn, aged 76 years. Mr. Thorburn came to Thames in 1869, and was interested in the mining industry. He was associated with the Otonui, Kuranui, Queen of Beauty and May Queen mines, and was battery manager for Souter's Battery when the Cambria patch was discovered. Later he was amalgamator for the Komata reefs.
He leaves a widow, formerly Miss Otto, a daughter of Mr. Andrew Otto, who was one of the earliest of Thames prospectors. There are three sons, Messrs. William and Andrew Thorburn, of Auckland, and Mr. Lewis Thorburn, of Thames, and five daughters, Mesdames Swales, Eady, Hindman, McNiece (Auckland) and Mrs. Smith (Thames). [4]
