Biography

George was born in 1885. He was the son of William Thorburn and Elizabeth Otto. [1] He married Ivy Florence Wright in 1907 [2] They separated in 1913 and were divorced in 1916

MAINTENANCE ORDERS... A similar order was made in the case of Ivy Florence Thorburn v. George Ernest Thorburn. v In this instance drunkenness was again alleged, together with cruelty. Mr. Lundon appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. Matthews for defendant. Mrs. Thorburn said in evidence that her husband had struck her several times, and that she had been forced to leave him on more than one occasion. Defendant denied these allegations, saying that his wife had no reason for complaint. His Worship gave Mrs. Thorburn custody of the child, granted the separation order, and directed that defendant should pay his wife 25s per week towards. her support.[3]

In each of the following undefended petitions for divorce held over from the last session in order that certain documents might be filed, a decree nisi was granted, to be moved absolute at the expiration of three months : —Ivy Florence Thorburn, petitioner, from George Ernest Thorburn, on the ground of misconduct; [4]

He married 2nd the war widow Eliza Paulsen in 1919 [5]

He appears in the local Thames newspaper a number of times after this, for various infractions of the law: neglecting to clean out a pig-stye in 1922 [6]  ; assault in 1922 [7]; allowing cattle to wander at large in 1922 [8] ; stealing chickens in 1923 [9]; receiving a galvanized iron pipe stolen by his step-son L W Paulson in 1923 [10] ; stealing a bag out of a car parked at the Royal Hotel in 1924 [11]; and using obscene language to a neighbour in 1927 [12]

He passed away at the Thames Hospital in 1928 age 43 [13] and was buried at the Tararu cemetery
