Biography

Robert was born in 1860. He was the son of William Thorburn and Mary Spiers.

1890 Has a shop in Pollen Street, Thames.[1]

GOLDEN WEDDING !MR. AND MRS. R. S. THORBURN To celebrate the occasion of their golden wedding, Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Thorburn, of Victoria Avenue, Remuera, held a reception and dance at the home of their eldest son, Mr. G. L. Thorburn, Burwood Crescent. The lounge room was attractively arranged with bowls of pink gladioli and carnations, while the hall was a bower of sheaves, floral baskets and bouquets presented by the guests. The ballroom was festooned with gold and amber lights. The long tables were decorated with gleaming brass vases filled with Iceland poppies and a large doubletier wedding cake stood on the table of honour. Mr. and Mrs. Thorburn received the guests, the latter wearing a graceful gown of prune-coloured lace and diamcnte. The members of the family present were: —Mrs. Johns, Mr. G. L. Thorburn, Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Lees, Mr. Roy Thorburn, Mr. and Mrs. C. Oxenham (Hamilton), Mr. and Mrs. W. Dawn, and Mr. and Mrs. Colin Thorburn. Mr. Charles Lees carried out the duties of toast-master.[2]

He passed away in 1948 age 88.

Mr Robert Spiers Thorburn of Remuera, has died at his seaside residence at Whangaparaoa, aged 88 Born at Whangaparaoa, he was the last surviving member of a family of 12 , His parents arrived in New Zealand from Scotland over 105 years ago. He was a member of the Lodge of Light. No. 454. Thames for 62 years, and was also a past senior grand deacon of the Grand Lodge of Ireland and a deputy Grand master of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Irish Freemasons in New Zealand.[3]
