Biography

Charles Thornburgh (Thornborough) of Methop (or Meathop) in Westmorland was the son of William and Catherine Langtree Thornburgh.[1][2][3] His birth has been estimated as about 1635, based on the estimated date of eldest brother Rowland's birth in 1625, and Charles' order in the list of siblings according to Nicolson & Burn.[1]

His wife, if he married, is unknown.

While some sources[4] have claimed that he emigrated to Ireland, ("The family was impoverished and bitter. Charles and his brother, Richard, listened to the teachings of George Fox Founder of the Quaker movement and became Quakers. When they emigrated to Ireland, they apparently settled in County Caven and attended the Cootehill Monthly Meeting.") these do not appear to be reliable and not confirmed by sources in Ireland. Certainly a number of people in the neighborhood of Methop did become Quakers.

Whether or not he went to Ireland, it seems that he may have ended up in Baltimore County, Maryland. In 1694, there was a "Charles Thornborow" recorded living on the same plantation as Rowland Thornburgh in Baltimore County, Maryland.[5] Based on Roland's will, it seems his closest English Thornburgh relatives were the Hampsfield/Meathop branch (ie the branch to which Charles belongs). It thus seems likely that the Charles Thornburgh in the Baltimore County tax list is the same person as Charles the son of William Thornburgh and Catherine Langtree. Charles was likely a first cousin of Rowland Thornburgh of Baltimore County, Maryland.

In 1695, as "Charles Tharnburgh", he was again recorded living with Rowland Thornburgh in Baltimore County, Maryland.[6]

It is uncertain when and where Charles died. If he is indeed the person who appears on the Baltimore County tax lists, then it was sometime after 1695, perhaps in the Province of Maryland.

Research Notes

Charles was previously attached to Elizabeth Leyburn as a spouse, but given the evidence of her mother's Will, stating that Elizabeth was a spinster in 1694, [7] she has been detached as the wife of Charles.

Charles was previously attached as father of Edward Thornbrough whose parentage is presently unknown.

Methop and Ulpha is a different place from Meathop. Meathop is slightly east and north of Cartmel. The statement "there has never been a Methop or Meathop in Lancaster." is incorrect. Meathop was a place with a manor whereas Meathop and Ulpha was or is a parish, a general area. Thornburgs (multiple spellings) lived all along the road from the bay to Cartmel, then east to Meathop and further east to Kendal. Hampsfield, the ancient family seat and estate, was in Lancaster, but today is in Cumbria. This was a time of great turmoil in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The monarchy had been overthrown and replaced by Cromwell's parliamentary government and there was major religious persecution. The boundary lines were dissolving and royal loyalists, Catholics, and outlying sects of protestants were being hunted down and killed.

The "uncertain" notation can be removed from this Charles Thornborough. Here are two separate references.

(1) Charles Thornburgh of Methop, the third son of William and Catherine Langtree Thornburgh, married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Lascelles Leyburne of Cunswick and Witherslack. (Thomas Leyburne was the third son of John Leyburne (died 1663) and Catherine Carus of Halton.).

They had two children, Robert and Edward, who emigrated to Ireland. The family was impoverished and bitter. Charles and his brother, Richard, listened to the teachings of George Fox Founder of the Quaker movement) and became Quakers. When they emigrated to Ireland, they apparently settled in County Caven and attended the Cootehill Monthly Meeting.

The Quakers first came into prominence in Northern Ireland in the early 1600's. the movement started in Ireland about 1654.

George Fox was a product of the reigns of Charles I, Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, Charles II, James II and William and Mary. He was a pacifist (aggressively carrying his arguments to his enemies). He would bow to no man (exemplified by refusal to remove hat), considering all equal. he condemned slavery, the low place of women in society, and the conditions of prisons. He believed in religious freedom for all. he was imprisoned and beaten many times because of his convictions. His message of the Brotherhood of Man and the Inner Light is timely in any age. (His parents were Puritans.)

Charles and his brother were listed as his followers.

Charles Thornburgh of Methop (east of Cartmel); married Elizabeth (born 1645), daughter of Thomas Leyburne and Dorthy Lascelles of Cunswick and Witherslack. (Thomas Leyburne was the third son of John Leyburne (died 1663) and Catherine Carus of Halton.

(Information on Thornburg's from the book, " A Discourse on the Thornburg Family", by Charles C. Thornburg III, 1979 privately printed and out of print.) This book is available for limited search on Hathitrust.org.

Clare, I have placed a lookup request in G2G for the Charles Thornburg book. I've moved three citations on this profile as all they show is that William and Catherine had a son Charles. I do not find in any available online parish registers, etc, or other records for Charles or any documentation of children he may have had. Barnes mentions Robert but not Edward as a son of Charles but is again citing as his source an unsourced LDS ancestral file. The attached wife profile has no citation for a marriage (and incorrectly cites Herbert Standing who does not address this generation).

Clare - if you have the Thornburgh Family book, perhaps you could copy here the citations from it that refer to this Charles

As Methop is in Westmorland, not Lancashire, I am changing that birthplace on the assumption that it may be the correct place

Methop in Lancashire does not seem to exist. Is this meant to be Meathop and Ulpha in Cumberland (then Westmorland)?

This entire family appears to come from a book British Roots of Maryland Families which has not a shred of documentation for this family nor the lineage. Little of it makes sense and many of the names and places cannot be documented.

A little further upstream this undocumented family gets linked into the Thornboroughs of Yorkshire, Lancashire and Westmoreland through a son who does not appear in the Heraldic Visitation of Westmoreland in 1615 (College of Arms, 1753, p 26-29).

There are extensive records of the family in Westmorland. They had property there in the vicinity of Kendal.

Note: An extensive list of Thornboroughs (and name variants) baptised in Lancashire 17th Century organized by parish is found here: https://www.thornber.net/famhist/htmlfiles/borough.html Charles nor the parents William and Catherine are found among these records.
