Thomas Thorne was likely born in Yardley-Hastings, Northamptonshire in about 1521. His birth is estimated and based on the likely birth dates of his children. His family can be traced to the early 1400s in Northamptonshire. His wife was Mary Purefoy; she came from a very distinguished family with a well known pedigree. Thomas was a gentleman and used the courtesy title of Esquire to indicate that he was a man of high standing, but not a knight. His name was Thorne alias Dorne. [1] In his will, written 29 October 1588, Thomas left a lenghty list of bequests to the parishes of Yardley, Syersham, Olney, East Mandiff, Frenden, Asby David, and Denton. He also left money to the churches of Yardley and Syersham. These requests were not random, but made because of family and land connections with those parishes. Also named in the will were his wife Mary and:
His will was proved 9 May 1589.[1]
The ancestry of Thomas Thorne was thoroughly researched and published in The Genealogist in 2005. Thomas was not from Durham, England, which is some 200 miles to the north of Yardley-Hastings. [2][3]
Thomas was born in 1521. There are dates that cite his birth as 1536 but this would make him too young for his children whose birthdates are more reliable.
