Biography

Ann Thornton was born about 1652 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. She married Henry Peyton[1] in April 1685 in Virginia. Ann (Thornton) Peyton died in 1691 in Cabell County, Virginia (now West Virginia).[2]

Henry Peyton and Ann Thornton (born about 1661) were married in 1684/85. They had the following children:[3]

  • Capt. Valentine PEYTON (born about 1687).
  • John PEYTON (born in 1691).

Henry and Ann (Thornton) Peyton "of Prince William County" appear to also have had a son named Henry, who died without issue during the American Revolution.[4]

The same source of Henry, son of Henry and Ann, includes a Henry Peyton, son of John and Eleanor Peyton of Stony Hill in Stafford County, Virginia:[5]

Henry Peyton, 1744-1814, was a son of John Peyton of "Stony Hill", Stafford Co., and his second wife Eleanor ____. He lived on Broad Run on the north slope of the Pignut adjoining Gordonsdale. He married, 1764, Susanna Fowke, daughter of Capt. Chandler and Mary (Fossaker) Fowke.

Removed Valentine as her son. And Henry already has a profile attached for Ann Thorton attached (Thornton-255), so this profile needs to be merged or detached.
Date Estimated based on historical events and/or calculated by ages of other family members.Note: Prior to June 2015, profile showed a birth year of 1760, which was changed to 1665 (no source, but based on husband's birth circa 1657 and son's birth 1686). Birth year changed Dec. 7, 2015 to 1652.[citation needed]

Date and place, "Other Last Names" added Dec. 7, 2015 by Laura:

Other Last Names: Thornton
Born: 1652 (changed from profile's previous guess of 1665)
Death (added): 1691

From a post by Harold Davey on the profile for Valentine Peyton (born 1686, m Frances Linton):

Vallentine's mother was Ann Unknown. Vallentine and Frances had seven children, including John. See page 318 "The Peytons of Virginia II" for children and life story of Valentine.

notes from Liz:

I had proposed a merge of Payton-165 and Peyton-15 with the comment: I don't know how valid the surnames are that are given in connection with Payton-165, but son Craven is shown as m West, and text for Peyton-15 says son Craven m West, so these profiles should be me merged. Please merge Payton into Peyton (or reset as an unmerged match and discuss). Please set duplicates with different surnames as unmerged matches. Thanks!
I rejected a match with Ann Barnes Barnes-3093 and removed Ann Barnes (profile has born "about 1760") as wife of Henry Peyton (who was born about 1657, based on information in depositions listed for Stafford pioneers, which includes Henry Peyton as 34 on 10 June 1691, the date he gave a deposition). These posts from me on the profile page for Ann Barnes pertain:
I removed Henry Peyton-16 as the spouse of Ann Barnes. Henry was born 1656 & this profile for Ann Barnes shows she was born 1760. Henry's wife was named Ann, but I've not been able to find any evidence of a last name for her. (June 15, 2015)
as far as I've been able to determine, Valentine's parents are Henry and Ann (last name unknown). Could you add something about "Barnes"? And check the birth year? Thanks! (January 4, 2015)
is born 1760 a typo for 1660? Son Valentine b 1686 (October 4, 2014)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Anne by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Anne:

Hi Jeremy! There is no Anne Barnes Thornton. Could you merge her away? Into Barnes-3093 or Unknown-13737 or Thornton-255 (note that only the last two are attached as wives of Henry Peyton-16, Barnes-3093 needs research, but I think she's probably supposed to be Burr Harrison's wife - see comments on Barnes-3093).

I posted this note to Ann Unknown last June:

I think I've finally figured out part of the problem. According to the rtf file posted by Harold Davey of the Peyton Society of Virginia, there were two Ann Thorntons who married Henry Peyton - one in the 1600s and one in the 1700s. see http://vagenweb.org/stafford/groupsheets/HenryPeyton16563GenNarrDesc.RTF update - see also Anne (Thornton) Peyton (abt.1726-bef.1755)

Thanks!

Unknown-13737 and Thornton-255 are not ready to be merged because: the Peyton Society of Virginia maintains that the maiden name of the mother of Valentine who married Linton is unknown. There are so many Valentine Peytons in the area at the time, and two sets of Henry Peyton m Ann Thornton (although not contemporary), more/better sources are needed before we can say that the mother of Valentine who married Linton is Thornton. For now, the profiles need to remain unmerged. Thanks! P.S. see the rtf posted by Harold Davey, PSV, for more information about the two Ann Thorntons m Henry Peytons... I think the link is in the previous comment that I posted on Anne Thornton's profile page.

Unknown-13737 and Thornton-255 appear to represent the same person because: Dates and children match.

yup - two sets of Henry Peyton & Ann Thornton (per the rtf posted by Harold Davey of the Peyton Society of Virginia). I think I've got them correctly separated now. Thornton-3963 is the other Ann Thornton m Henry Peyton.

two different generations had Henry Peyton m Ann Thornton. See Peyton-1096 & Peyton-16. Source is Harold Davey of Peyton Society of Virginia via this rtf document

Check the birth dates for her children. Several were born after Thornton-255 died in 1691. Perhaps two different families have been combined?
Thornton-2355 and Thornton-255 appear to represent the same person because: Same person just cleaning up duplicate
