Source: Jeannie Vaneps rvaneps@@lcp2.net 11 May 01. My grandmother, LulaMae Thurmond, was adopted when about 4 or 5 years old from the "Home forthe Friendless" in Leavenworth, Kansas in the year of 1889. She wasplaced in this Home with her sister, Lola Thurmond, with the thought thather
mother, Elizabeth McCord Thurmond, would return for them at some point. The reason they were left in this Home was because their father had diedand Elizabeth, who had 8 children, had no way of caring for all herchildren. My GMother was adopted by George and Lucy (Little) Harris. They changed my
GMother's name to Edna Katherine Harris and I also believe they changedher BDate to correspond with her adoption date. I have the adoptionpapers, but would like to find out where and exactly when she was born. The "Home for the Friendless", it is my unserstanding, buurned down andsupposedly, there are no records from them anywhere. In 1880, the familywas living with their father and mother in Cedar County, Missouri and in1886, when their last son was born, (as his birth is recorded) they wereliving in the adjacent Co of St Clair, MO. My grandmother was borneither in 1884 or 1885, but where and when I do not know. and when I donot know. I would sure love to find out, though.
Also, my great grandfather (the above grandmother's father),William Anderson Thurmond, died sometime between 1886 and 1888 and issupposedly buried in an unmarked grave in Ft. Scott, Kansas. I havevisited this area twice and can find nothing--not one shred of evidencethat he died and was buried there. In 1888, Elizabeth his wife, wasliving in Ft. Scott and listed in the city directory as a widow with ason. I do not know exactly what month this city directory came out. Isthere a way of finding his death records, if there were some? I have evenvisited funeral homes in the area and so far, no records for that farback. I am thinking that maybe he may have died where there was
family in the west central part of Missouri--Dederick, Stockton, ElDorado Springs, Missouri or even Taneyville, Missouri where his Fatherdied and is buried."
