Norton Thurston was born on 29 March 1745 at Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. (Thurston Genealogies shows date as 29 May 1745.) He was the son of Samuel Thurston (mariner) and Eunice Anthony.
Norton married an Ann Greene on 25 May 1769 at Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. (Which Ann Greene?)
Norton Thurston was enumerated on the military census of 1777 Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island as "Norton Thurston, 16-50 years old, Able to Bear Arms, resident of Newport." His name appeared again on tax lists in 1782.
His family was still in Newport at the 1790 US Federal Census; by 1800 they were living in Easton, Washington County, New York, and in 1810 they were found in Canajoharie, NY.
Norton went to Delaware County, Ohio, in 1810, onto salt lands and bored four hundred feet, but found the salt not strong enough to pay the expense of working. He soon moved back to New York.[1]
