Biography

Martha, who apparently preferred her middle name Alice, was born in Franklin County, Indiana, on 19 September 1862.^[1] She was the daughter of Joseph Thurston and Mary Welsh.^[1] On 17 May 1884 she married George C. Bookout.^[2] The couple had several children, including Pearl, Clarence, Joseph, and perhaps others. In about 1909 the family moved to Canada; the 1911 Census found them in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.^[3] They returned to Indiana in the 1920s, possibly in 1921, although Joseph remained in Canada.^[4][5] Alice died of pneumonia in Summitville on 9 January 1946.^[1] She is buried in Vinson Memorial Park.^[6]

• In the 1911 Canadian census, the next family on the enumeration sheet is headed by John Bookout, presumably George's brother.
