Biography

In Brief
William Ticehurst was probably the son of John Ticehurst and Mary Unknown, who was born at Beckley, Sussex, England about April 1769,[1] and baptized at Beckley on 9 April 1769.[2] He died at Rye, Sussex, England on 3 May 1848 (age 79),[1] and he was buried at Brede, Sussex, England on 7 May 1848.[3][4] He married first Ann Barham at Brede parish church, Brede, Sussex, England on 13 July 1795 (witnessed by Francis Barham (mark). Note the William Ticehurst signature here matches the 1812 Wm Ticehurst marriage and the witness signature of the 1800 Samule Ticehurst marriage).[5][6] She was the daughter of Francis and Silvester (Ditch) Barham, born at Brede about March 1778,[7] and she died at Brede in July 1810 and was buried there on 3 July 1810.[8].[9] William Ticehurst married second the widow Elizabeth (Unknown) Selmes at Brede parish church on 16 August 1812.[10][11] She was born about 1767,[12] and she died at Brede on 21 December 1838.[12]

Residence History
He was living at Brede in 1841.[13]

Additional Facts

  • Education: little or no schooling, evidenced by the fact he signed by mark.[12]
  • Occupation: in 1838, at Brede: agricultural laborer.[12]
  • Religion: Anglican.

Family

Children of William and Ann (Barham) Ticehurst:

  1. Mary Ticehurst, born at Brede on 3 December 1797.[9]
  2. William Ticehurst, born at Brede on 20 February 1800.[14]
  3. John Ticehurst, born at Brede about February 1801.[9]
  4. Samuel Ticehurst, born at Brede about August 1802.[9]
  5. Thomas Ticehurst, born at Brede about November 1804.[15]
  6. Henry Ticehurst, born at Brede about May 1808.[9]

Child of William and Elizabeth (Selmes) Ticehurst:

  1. Robert Ticehurst, born at Brede about July 1813,[4], baptised 11 July 1813 at Brede.[16]

Research Notes

His second wife's maiden name was not Selmes, she was also a widow at the time of her marriage to William.

The connection to his probable parents is based on several factors. William had a life-long association with a Samuel Ticehurst who was about four years younger. The baptisms of William (1769) and Samuel (1773) are close matches for the ages of the two men in later records, Beckley is the parish to the immediate north of Brede, and William lived at Broadlands, a locale in Brede that is very close to the border with Beckley.

Conflicting and Rejected Information
Burial on 5 November 1769, at Beckley. The William Ticehurst buried this date was presumably not the infant son of John born here in April: the convention used in other entries in this source was to name the father for a child burial, and there is no parent named in this record, sugegsting it was an adult. And there was an older William Ticehurst in Beckley with children before but not after this date, so, presumably this was his burial.[17]

Two persons formerly linked as children of this William Ticehurst have been unlinked, because they are not among William's children in the baptism register for Brede parish where William lived (and where they were supposedly born), their birth dates are in some degree of conflict with those of other, documented children, and there is no other evidence in hand showing any connection of these two to this William's family:

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Please do not re-attached these non-children unless you have clear and convincing evidence of a connection.
