Biography

George Tierce was born about 1776 in Virginia. He is understood to be the son of Jonathan Andrew Tierce and Catherine Ely. [1] In 1797 George married Eleanor "Nellie" Gaines in Madison County, Virginia. [2] The couple moved to Laurens County, South Carolina. In 1820 they are enumerated on the federal census there. [3] The house hold was comprised as follows:

Three males born between the years 1811 and 1820;
Two males born between the years 1805 and 1810;
One male born prior to 1775;
Three females born between the years 1811 and 1820;
Two females born between the years 1805 and 1810;
One female born between the years 1795 and 1804 (likely 1798 to 1804 based on marriage date of couple);
One female born between the years 1776 and 1794.

Assuming that the children in the household were all the children of George and Nellie Gaines Tierce, their family included a number of children whose names have been lost. In 1830, the George Tierce family is again enumerated on the federal census in Laurens County, South Carolina. [4] Much reduced in size, the household was comprised as follows:

One male born between the years 1816 and 1820;
One male born between the years 1781 and 1790;
Two females born between the years 1811 and 1815;
One female born between the years 1801 and 1810;
One female born between the years 1781 and 1790.

In 1840, George and his family are for the third time enumerated on the federal census in Laurens County, South Carolina. [5] This time the household is comprised of but three persons, George, his wife (presumably), and one male between the ages of 20 and 29 (born 1811-1820). In 1850, George, Nellie and three of their grandchildren are enumerated on the federal census in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. [6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
