Winifred (Tiernan) Masters was an Irish famine orphan who emigrated to Australia between 1848-1850.
When Winifred Ina Tierney was born in 1834 in Roscommon, her father, James, was 51, and her mother, Margaret, was 42.
She arrived in Sydney on 29 July 1850 aboard the ship 'Tippoo Saib' and is recorded on the immigration register as 'Tiernan, Winifred', age 16, with the calling of 'Houseservant'.[1] She was an orphan and destitute who came to Australia under Earl Grey’s Famine Orphan Scheme.
She married David William Masters on 7 June 1853. They had 18 children in 26 years. She died on 12 May 1909 in Taree, New South Wales, having lived a long life of 75 years, and was buried in Mitchells Island, New South Wales.
