He had a creditable record during the Civil War. He enlisted for two years as a private in the 21st Infantry, New York Volunteers ; reinlisted in the New York cavalry, and served to the close of the war, rising from private to lieutenant He was mustered out of service as first lieutenant of cavalry. The promotion from sergeant to lieutenant was for a special act of bravery. At sergeant, he commanded a small squad of men and held a bridge in the face of a fierce fire from the enemy. When reinforcements arrived, it was found that but twelve of the original twenty-five were alive, and they were using their dead horses and comrades as breastworks
