Biography

1700 Birth and Parents

Joseph Tilghman is the son of Gydeon Tilghman and Margaret Manax. He is listed as their youngest son born 4 March 1700 in the record for Gideon Tilghman. [1]

1767 Death

He died in Somerset County, Province of Maryland, on 27 April, 1767.

Parents and Siblings

Joseph's father Gideon Tilghman, son of Christopher and his wife Ruth, was born in Accomac County, Virginia. He was in Somerset County, Maryland, by November 22, 1665. On April 1, 1669, he purchased "Golden Quarter", 100 acres; between 1682 and 1720 he purchased over 1000 acres: "Tilghman s Adventure" "Gideon s Luck", "Tilghman s Care", "Small Hopes", "Pool-Shape", and "Dale s Adventure". He married first Margarutt Maneux on February 15, 1681, and had issue: [2]

  1. Gideon,
  2. Solomon,
  3. Elinor and John (twins),
  4. Moses,
  5. Elizabeth,
  6. Joseph, and
  7. Aaron, all born in Manokin, Somerset County, Maryland. [2]

He married second Elizabeth Linzey, daughter of David Linzey. In his will, dated May 7, 1720, he leaves bequests to all his children listed above, evidently there were no children by second wife (Ann. Wills Box 3, folder 9). [2]

Marriage

Joseph Tilghman married Nancy Harris, sister of Captain Benton Harris of Worcester County, Maryland. [2]

Joseph was a Colonel in the Somerset Colonial Militia. [2]

Joseph Tilghman and Nancy Harris were the parents of Mary Tilghman. Both were living in Somerset County, Maryland when their daughter was born in 1751.

1763 Will

Joseph Tilghman's will was written 29 Jul 1763 and probated 27 Apr 1767 in Somerset Co., MD. His wife is not mentioned in the will - only their children; thus, she evidently died before July 1763. [3]

Joseph Tilghman's will bequeathed daughter, Mary Tilghman, a negro girl named Isabellow [sic]. [3]

Joseph died in 1767 in Somerset County, Maryland. [2]
