Biography

Name and Birth

Christopher S Tilghman (1600 - 1673) [1]

Stephen Tillman, author of the Tilghman family book "Spes Alit Agricolam," states that Christopher Tilghman was born about 1600 in Selling, Faversham Hundred, Kent County, England. [2][3]

Some other sources give the date of birth as 1592, also in the Faversham Hundred. [4][5][6]

Christopher Tilghman was born about 1600 in Snelling Parish, Faversham Hundred, Kent County, England. [7]

Disputed Mother

As has been shown on the profile Tilghman-6, Anne Sanders did not marry Christopher Tilghman the son of Nicholas Tilghman. She did marry Christopher Tylman[8] who was the son of Christopher Tylman, as per the Will of Christopher Tilman/Tylman [9] It is therefore not possible for Anne Sanders to be the mother of this profile (Tilghman-5).

1630 Marriage to Ruth Devonshire

He married Ruth Devonshire. [7]

Stephen Tillman states that Christopher Tilghman married Ruth Devonshire. [2]

Other sources give a marriage year of 1630, not unreasonable for someone born in 1600 or even 1592. However, some additional sources show that Ruth Devonshire, the bride of Christopher, was born in 1625 and died in 1694. [NOTE: No child of 5 was married, even in colonial Virginia - either her Birth or Marriage year is incorrect - by Chet Snow 1 Dec 2015.]

Yates, in the International Marriage Records data base, give an alternate date of marriage as 1648 in Accomack, Virginia, or in Maryland. [5] This is a better fit for Ruth's 1625 birth year, but it makes Christopher aged 48 or 56 at his marriage.

Property in England

Stephen Tillman reports that the "Visitation to Kent" records that Christopher Tilghman came into possession of Rhodes Court formerly owned by Thomas Bealde, and that Christopher, in turn, sold the estate to one Thomas Carter. Rhodes Court is described as being a Manor situated in the southeast extremity of the Parish of Selling, in the borough of Rhodes. Selling was the parish on the south, or opposite side, of the London Road. [2]

It is recorded that Christopher came into possession of "Rhodes Court" formerly owned by Thomas Beadle, and in turn sold it to Thomas Carter. "Rhodes Court" is described as a manor situated in the Southeast extremity of the Parish of Selling in the borough of Rhodes. [7]

1635 Immigration to Virginia

Christopher Tilghman was known as "the immigrant". Tillman reports that Christopher Tilghman arrived in Virginia 9 May 1635, as listed in Greer's "Early Emigrants to Virginia" and in "Patents of Virginia." [2] [3] Recorded dates associated with land are often the date of patent rather than the date of arrival.

According to Greer s Early Immigrants to Virginia and Patents of Virginia, Christopher immigrated to Virginia on May 9, 1635. [7].

This patent was for the transportation of 22 persons into the colony. This was in the form of headrights. [3] The place selected was known as Fort Tillman and was situated on the south side of the Moneus-a-Nock, (Monk's Neck), thence to Gravelly Run. This now, (or was in 1945), in Dinwiddie County. [3]

An alternative source gives the year of arrival in Virginia as 1638. [10]

His son Roger located on 1060 acres of land in Bristol Parish, Charles City Co., Va. on 4/20/1689. (Records of Landoffice, Richmond, Va.). [3]

1666 Marriage to Suanna Parram

He married Susanna Parram or Parham, born in 1648 and d. 3/2/1717 in Prince George Co., Va. [3] The year 1666 for the marriage is a pure estimate based on her birth year of 1648. She would have been 18 in 1666.

1672 Death

Christopher died James City County, Virginia. [7]

Christopher died in 1672 in James City, VA. at his property called "Tilghmans Adventure" in James City, Virginia, [11][12]

He died in James City County, Virginia.[2][3]

Children

Christopher and Ruth Tilghman had three Sons: Gideon, John, and Roger. [7].

  1. Roger Tilghman, b. 1650 who changed his name to Tillman. Listed in Spes alit agricolam. [2]. See also Roger Tillman and Roger Tillman.
  2. Gideon TilghmanListed in Spes alit agricolam. [2]
  3. John Tilghman. Listed in Spes alit agricolam. [2]

The following Research Notes have been attached to the profile for Christopher Tilghman-6.

"Date of birth - In a search for “Christopher T*m*; born 1560 +/- 20 ; in Kent” the only baptism for a “Christopher son of Nicholas” is a “Christopher Tyllman son of Nicholas Tyllman of Waldershare” who was baptised at SS Peter and Paul Eythorne on 22nd September 1566 (Eythorne is about 1 mile from Waldershare in Kent.) Source - "England, Kent, Canterbury Parish Registers, 1538-1986," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QGNJ-4P5M : 12 March 2020), Christopher Tyllman, 22 Sep 1566; from " Kent, Canterbury Archdeaconry Parish Registers Browse, 1538-1913," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d); citing Baptism, Eythorne, Kent, England, United Kingdom, Citing Canterbury Cathedral Archives, England. NB – Eythorne to Selling is 20+ miles

Children – there are baptisms in All Saints Snodland, Kent for an Armigill Tylghman and a John Tylghman , sons of a Christopher Tylghman. Source – John "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NBXQ-K8X : 20 March 2020), Chropher. Tylghman in entry for John Tylghman, 1592.

Source – Armigill "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NRZS-HWL : 20 March 2020), Armigill Tylghman, 1592.

The parish register is referenced in the source “Memories of Malling and its Valley” here https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/Memories_of_Malling_and_Its_Valley/x_QVAAAAYAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1 page 47 and reads “1592 Armigill and John ye sonns of Christopher Tylghman were baptised 23rd April” (twins and not triplets with the addition of an extra son Christopher) and then “1592 John the son of Christopher Tylghman the 3rd June” – whilst the transcript in the book does not identify this as a burial, the parish registers on FindmyPast record “John Tilghman buried 3rd June 1592, son of Christopher, at All Saints Snodland”.

It should be noted that Snodland to Eythorne is 40+ miles.

There is no baptism for an Isaac or Mary T*man 1580-1620 son/daughter of Christopher on Ancestry/FindmyPast/Family Search/FreeReg and the ‘John Tilghman-205, born before 1619’ is the son of Christopher Tylman and Anne Saunders who are having children baptised in Selling from 1600 to 1621 (this Christopher and Anne Tylman are the family of Selling – the Will of Christopher’s father, also Christopher, and the Will of Edward Saunders, Anne’s father, confirm this).

The reference to Christopher Tylman and Anne Saunders above leads to the last error, which is that the incorrect wife (Anne Sanders-3420) has been given to Christopher Tilghman-6.

Given this information I am proposing that Anna (Sanders-3420) Tilghman be detached as the wife of Christopher Tilghman-6 and the mother of John Tilghman-137; Christopher jr Tilghman-5 and John Tilghman-205.

I don't follow your post, but I may just be missing your point. The cited source (Tillman's book Spes Alit Agricolam does identify Christopher Tilghman (Tilghman-6) as the father of this Christopher Tilghman, and identifies the father's wife as Anna Sanders. The source is available as a free ebook here : https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=tBhWAAAAMAAJ

Tillman does not cite his source so he may be wrong, but given that there is a clear source cited in this profile for the claim concerning his parents, could you provide a shorter summary of why you believe that Tillman's claim about this relationship is incorrect?

The Research Notes, with the attached sources, are there to demonstrate/illustrate how it is not possible for Anne Sanders to be the mother of this profile (Tilghman-5).

I apologise if the issue is unclear but the need to create the Research Notes was because :

I had inadvertently created profiles for Christopher TYLMAN-6 and Anne (Sanders-15148) TYLMAN and their family from the original parish registers for St Mary the Virgin, Minster (baptism of Anne Sanders daughter of Edward); St Augustine, Northbourne (marriage 2nd October 1598 Christopher and Anne) and St Mary the Virgin, Selling (baptism of Christopher Tylman son of Christopher; and the baptisms of the children of Christopher and Anne) plus the Wills of Christopher Tilman of Selling (made 1599) and Edward Sanders of Minster (made 1608). Apart from confirming the family in Selling, these sources also confirmed that Christopher Tylman-6 was baptised at Selling in 1573 as the son of Christopher Tylman and that he was named as the son of “Christopher Tilman of Selling” in that persons Will of 1599.

NB. Wikitree did not recognise TYLMAN as an alternative spelling of TILGHMAN.

The ancestry of this profile (Tilghman-5) is

  • Christopher Tilghman-5, the son of
  • Christopher Tilghman-6, the son of
  • Nicholas Tilghman-7

There are primary sources for the baptism of some of the children of the profile Christopher Tilghman-6 in the Research Notes in Snodland, which are at variance with the information on the Wikitree profiles. There is also a primary source for a baptism of Christopher Tilghman-6 son of “Nicholas Tilghman-7 of Waldershare” in Eythorne on 22nd September 1566.

Whilst I have looked at the cited publication (which, I would suggest, relies on tertiary, possibly secondary but definitely not primary sources for its information), I have also seen the comment made under “Caution: Implausible Dates and Missing Generations” on the profile for Tilghman-6 which reads “The information in The Tillman Genealogy Spes Alit Agricolam is all suspect based on the information in the Kent and Selling parish records. As a result of this information the links to Christopher Tilghman is being removed from Hope Tillman's Genealogy Pages”.

I hope I have been able to explain myself clearly but if not please ask and I will try to clarify further.

That's clear, and great research. It's not surprising that the genealogy in Tillman's book contains errors, given that he does not cite any of his primary sources. Are you willing to take a crack at correcting the bios in the affected profiles with citations to the relevant primary sources? We also need a "Disputed Spouse" and "Disputed Mother" subsection in the Research Notes for each of the affected profiles, so another user does reattach these incorrect relationships.

I've removed the section on multiple generations; you can see it on the left-hand column of the following link:

Beautifully researched profile. A few things:

1. There are a lot of profile managers on this profile. If you're not actively researching this person, I suggest you shift to Trusted List. You can still track updates through your family feed. Thank you.

2. There's a large section about subsequent generations that really doesn't belong on a person's profile. Any objections to moving this to a free space page ?

3. There are "objects" listed at the bottom that are inaccessible to people without an ancestry.com subscription. What are these? Can someone check? What do we need to extract from or know about these ?

Christopher Tilghman Jr. and Gideon Tilghman are in my direct line of ancestry. I look for additional info for all my ancestry on any given day. However, there has been a lot added to this file that may or may not be correct, but I did not add those items. Edna Wood

Edna, what do you think may be inaccurate ?

It appears a lot has been added without documentation from Ancestry.com. It may be correct, however documents or reference should be added. I need to study these entries more, maybe.

Tilghman-217 and Tilghman-5 appear to represent the same person because: Consistent birth and death info, same wife and son. Merging other family members. Thanks!

I did a rough re-ordering of Christopher's data, eliminating duplicates, in order to better understand his son Roger, who exists in three profiles which I'm about to propose merging. Hope what I did makes sense!

We now have three profiles for Christopher's wife Ruth. In one she is born Blount and first married Devonshire before marrying Tilghman, and the other two she is born Devonshire and then married Tilghman. Does any one have access to facts to sort this out? We need to know what her birth surname was before proposing a merger ot the three.

Tilghman-5 and Tilghman-184 appear to represent the same person because: All data is compatible, except for birth dates, which only vary by ~35 years 1600.vs.1635, and which are uncertain anyway.
