Note

General Notes: Newspaper article (The Knoxville Journal): "Nellene Tillery, 14, Dies After Three Years of Illness; She was Cheerful -- "Nellene Tillery, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P.E. Tillery, died Thursday at 12:45 p.m. at the home, 902 Chicamauga Avenue. She had been ill for about three years, suffering from a spinal malady that baffled medical skill. Complications caused her death. "Although she was confined to the home for months, she remained cheerful and accomplished much in bringing happiness to her little friends. "She attended school until her illness prevented and then she continued to study under the direction of her mother. She mastered the art of painting flowers and pictures. Admired by all who knew her, the patient little girl also was especially popular with the children in the neighborhood. She was a member of the Baptist church and attended church and Sunday School when she was able. "She was treated in a hospital at Lexington, Ky., for some time and apparently improved. "Nellene was a niece of Haworth Johnson, proprietor of Courtesy Drug store. "She is survived by her parents and four sisters, Rosemary, Ruth, Helen and Betty Caroline. "The body will be removed from Sallings to the home this morning, and funeral services wil be held today at 2:30 p.m. at Lincoln Park Baptist church. The Rev. H.F. Templeton will officiate. Burial will be in Bookwalter cemetery. "Paulbearers will be Roy Johnson, Walter Johnson, Herbert, Guy and H.B. Graig, Jr., and Arthur Tillery. Newspaper story: "Crippled Girl Loses Battle Against Death; Nelline Tillery Kept Up Work at School While Confined to Bed. "Brave, little Nelline Tillery has lost her fight with death. Crippled as the result of a spine infection five years ago, and confined most of the time to bed, she nevertheless continued her school work, made excellent grades, and was consistently promoted. She died Thursday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.E. Tillery, 902 Chicamauga Avenue. She was 14 years old. "Nelline was for three years an 'associate member' of her class at Lincoln Park School. Her sisters brought her assignments home every afternoon and carried her completed lessons back to school in the mornings. She kept her books near her bed, and every day worked on the same lessons her more fortunate classmates were working on at school. "Up until three years ago she had been able to attend school wearing a cast. "She was the most cheerful child in the neighborhood, in spite of her illness, and Mrs. Lula Kennedy, principal of Lincoln Park School, says that Nelline was one of the brightest students she has ever had. "Besides studying her school lessons and Sunday School lessons (she was a member of the Baptist Church), Nelline had learned to paint flowers and pictures."
